Saw it last night. Great story line. Very well constructed and clever film. Would recommend.

Yep me too. The brain was firing on at least 7.99 cylinders from the opening scenes all the way to the end. A top watch. My bro took me last night (his third time) and says you get more out of it each time.

I never really had anything against Leonardo DiCaprio, as many seem to, but I can say that after seeing him in "Blood Diamond" and now this, I am liking his talent immensely.

Very talented actor for sure. He seems to chose his scripts very carefully too. I guess he can afford to be choosey now.

Just got back from seeing this.

Holy, moly!

Unlike anything I've ever seen. Christopher Nolan is one twisted man! That's a good thing -- this movie is sensational.

I agree with H in as much that it's unlike anything I've ever seen. But the similarities stop there.

None out of ten from me I'm afraid folks. This movie was total plop from start to finish. I expect better of LdC. What's more. I defy anyone to tell me what the plot was

Tip: if you want to waste 17 buckeroonies, just throw it down the drain or give it to the streetkids. At least that way you'll still have the 2 plus hours to do something useful with

I thought the plot was obvious...

It's a film about making film, told from the director's perspective.

The characters are metaphors; there's an actor, a producer, a director, a screenwriter, a technical creative associate...

H,

wow, are you sure? I must be thicker than I thought :P

Oh well. All I'd say is that I'd be surprised if many in the audience see it that way. At least I hope they don't, - I don't mind being thick, as long as I'm not too much thicker than average:P;)

Folks....
Its a Swedish surrealist film noir:

The sub plot is : Dead Fish

Does anyone just ENJOY a movie anymore, instead of picking it to bits?

I thought it was great. Just the escape from reality I need once in a while.

Octane

waa waa. All I did was mention how the plot came across to me.

Like any (good) art, you can infer meaning from it. This doesn't equate to picking it to bits. Picking it to bits would be to detail all the flaws.

I enjoyed it.

Yes, but fair play Baz, - it helps if you understand what it's about and that was my point, and is what's being discussed here.

However, it's your thread Baz and I hope I didn't upset the applecart too much by saying it was er ... plop I think I said.

I'm just a little amused that those who seem to have understood it, have it down variously as swedish film noir and something about film maker's metaphors. And H, you didn't just 'mention' your interpretation (of the plot), you said you thought it was "obvious".

But hey, each to their own, and we're all entitled to our opinions.

(But it was plop ;):P )

Interestingly, rottentomatoes.com gives it very many good to great reviews. But there was at least one, right at the end, written by someone who expresses my opinion beautifully. If I may quote from that site ...

"It is irritating for an hour, being so gloomily lit that you need fog lights, then it opens up into a marvellously inventive, somewhat silly but enjoyable heist movie, with a good cast doing things I doubt even they could explain. "

That would be pretty accurate imo

I think we need to let Sheldon know that the "Swedish film noir" thing was ...
wait for it...

A JOKE !

I haven't seen the movie.

For what its worth the commercials seem good with lots of cool CGI but really really not at all suggestive of a Swedish film, much less of a "noir" genre...We need as "Sarcasm" emoticon I think...

Baz is right just enjoy it for entertainment value.

Most if not all movies can be overanalysed.

I'm excited about seeing this. I always get excited when a new film comes out that actually involves testing the mind and human discovery. It's a shame they always have such awe inspiring ideas and they are so caught up on small sequences they had running through their mind that they fail to involve the plot until the very end and it always turns out to be extremely predictable.
Which is a shame because a lot of people will sit in a movie and consider what could happen next and some of their ideas for a plot twist would probably be miles ahead of those who wrote it to begin with.

Anyway, I could ramble on for hours but I'll spare you all ;) I still think it looks like a movie worthwhile spending 17 bucks or whatever ridiculous amount of money it is nowadays to see a movie at the cinemas. Plus Leonardo DiCaprio is actually a pretty fantastic actor and it has Michael Caine in it!!

We viewed Inception last Thursday night.

We came away having been entertained for a couple of hours.

It is no secret that since the advent of home theatres, the
cinemas are finding it harder to attract an audience and our
experience on Thursday night reinforced this for us as
we looked about the enormous cinema that was almost empty.

Nolan's brilliant Memento (2000) has always been a hard act to
follow for this talented and creative director.

When I think of Nolan's films, two things instantly come to
mind. One is the use of non-linear story structure which is
brought about through the style of editing. Nolan & Dody Dorn's
incredible editing in Memento lets us see the world through the
mind of the character of Leonard who suffers short-term memory
loss. In Insomnia (2002), their editing puts us behind the eyelids
of the detective played by Al Pacino. Nolan's employment in more
recent years of Aussie editor Lee Smith continues the trend,
Smith having been an editor on the last two Batman films and
also on Inception. The second thing that comes to mind with
regards the Nolan films I have seen is that the main character
always has some flaw. It was true in Memento, in Insomnia, in
Nolan's depiction of Bruce Wayne in Batman and again the
character played by DiCaprio in Inception. It seems
intentionally, these aren't characters that we would want to be.
We stand aloof from them and see them for what they are.

For me personally, rather than come way from Inception with
the view of it being fresh and original, I came away feeling
that I have been on this "through the looking glass"
movie experience before. As I watched the movie, I could
not help but feel I have had this dream before, when I watched
The Matrix (1999), The Machinist (2004), Brainstorm (1993),
Tron (1982), Fantastic Voyage (1966) and so on, all who have
handled the genre with varying degrees of success or otherwise.
Out of all these, I would have to single out The Matrix
as it took the genre to a new level both technically and
creatively. Like Nolan's own Memento, the Wachowski brother's
Matrix is one hard act to follow.

With such enormous amount of effort these days put into sound
special effects, it sometimes seems to be at the loss of clarity
of dialog. Ken Watanbe's accent is difficult enough and his
lines became a mumble at times. Pete Postlethwaite's last dying
words left us coming out of the theatre asking each other
"What did he say he was disappointed about?". :)

On a movie trivia note, one thing that did leave us personally
amused was the depiction of the city of Mombasa. The director
makes the assumption that for the vast majority of western
viewers, Mombasa is some far away place, like Timbuktu, that
they have unlikely to have seen. Both of us having been in and
driven all around Mombasa, I can safely inform readers who
have got this far that it looks absolutely nothing like the
place depicted in Inception. :) It phased us significantly that
it brought attention to itself and we awoke out of the movie
magic suspension of reality dream for a while. :) Anyway,
for some dreamers, what the place really looks like will
matter not and hopefully they will go away having been
entertained.

I didn't waste my $17 seeing this movie. Thanks to our electricity supplier for the two free tickets all we wasted was our time going to see it. Each to their own as far as movies go but this was certainly not our cup of tea.

And one more comment if I may on movies in general. What goes with a 1:10 movie not actually starting till 1:35, 25 minutes of ads and tripe. And yes I am a frequent movie goer I just never timed how much garbage is on before the movie starts.

Rant over, clear skies to all.

I saw it this morning and really enjoyed it .... very clever indeed. lots of shooting though - if I had watched it at home i would have FF the shooting bits, to a degree. Some of the fight sequences in the hotel were so well done.
Leo did great, as did rest of cast, and ending was v.good. 4 stars from me. ;)
The local cinema I go to doesnt show adds - you get 2 previews of upcoming films then into the main feature!!

I just watched this on DVD.
My son bought it for me for Christmas.

I didn't like it one Iota!

The start dragged on for about a week, then the action started and I was already lost so I just watched hoping it would start to make sense. It didn't.

Then in the last 5 minutes I started to work it out but hated the ending.

So, all up, as I already said: I didn't like it.
The previews are very misleading.

Got the bluray as a Xmas present and watched it over the new year again. Enjoyed it thoroughly. It gets better as you watch it again I reckon. Stuff I missed first time when I saw it at the theater.
