Hello everyone.
Encouraged by the repro of NGC 1532, I set about redoing another galaxy image - NGC 6744 in Pavo. My first attempt was nothing short of unsatisfactory really.

So again, for comparison purposes, the original is attached to this thread, and the new image is here (1.8mb)
http://www.martinpughastrophotography.id.a u/images/NGC6744LRGB.jpg

This is a straight LRGB of 9.5.5.5 hours, and I had a pile of lum data binned 2x2 to get those outer faint arms.

Hope you like this new version!

I certainly like the increased colour and the blue arms more. It seems to have come at a cost of a bit of an overly blue background though.

To be fair this monitor is not the one I use when processing and it seems to highlight backgrounds more than my usual.

That is a wonderful image blue arms just lovely and fully developed, inner structure very detailed. Star colours excellent.

Thought when we left UK for Brisbane the S Hemisphere did not have good galaxies like up North. How wrong I was after browing my planetarium there are loads in Pavo Fornax Sculptor Cetus Dorado and the list goes on, some galaxies are really big like 253 amongst others. I have a lot to learn!

Like it? Love it, Martin! Not an easy target to extract the level of detail in the arms. It has quite a low surface brightness, very faint. Top work.

Martin,

I like both of them. I can't choose!

Spectacular, whichever way you look at it.

More, please.

Actually Martin I like the first one better!

I think the repro has a green/blue tinge to the whole thing. I like the more muted colours of the first image.

But, it's your image, so it's your opinion that matters.

Either way it's an effing great image.

Cheers

Thanks again everyone

it was 2 years ago when I imaged that galaxy, so it is quite interesting to see how the processing techniques can improve an image or not as the case may be.

appreciate the comments.

Its interesting to see the boosted faint detail in the outer arms in the original ( I had no idea they extended so far!), but the colours and overall feel of the new work is outstanding. Thanks for showing what's possible Martin.

Exquisite as usual Martin.

One for the monthly challenge thread if you're interested?

Thanks again.

I think I really stretched the first version too far - it made it very noisy and lacked depth and colour.

Thanks for the feedback.

Nice sidonio Martin but my prference would go to the first image. I think the extentions are clearer and the core is far superior.

Maybe the first one but either way that is jaw dropping work there Martin!!!:eyepop:

Cheers Daniel.

It's stunning, crisp detail, wonderful color, a delight to see.

If you ask me about both versions I'd say the first one will look better for the general public while the second one will look better for astrphotographers.

Thanks again
this is an interesting exercise! I am quite surprised to get people vote for the first version.

On reflection, Stuart is right about the blue tinge- I shall fix that.

I did pop this into the monthly challenge....although, it is a repro from 2008 data.

Thanks Martin,

There's no prize or judging, so images taken some time ago are still welcome. Delighted to have contributions from the high-end imagers of IIS.
