Pretty much a pressure wave compressing air/moisture/condensation as the craft approaches mach.

If it was a sonic boom all those sailors would be in hospital.

RAAF fighter pilots were limited to around .92 mach as the mach speed can change with air density (actually air temp)......aka you are flying along at .98..hit more dense air (lower temp air) and suddenly you are at 1.0 mach.

More than one pilot has been caught out in this manner. I had a friend put in hospital by a transonic boom. That's why they have max mach velocity rule of around .92 unless in designated areas.

Still that is a most impressive pressure wave..I never cease to be impressed by them!

Hi,

I'd give the cameraman a nod too, keeping it in the frame and not falling over.

Cheers

Love it JJJ.

I have had that video on my computer for a long while.

I have a collection of them.

Here is another for which I found a link on youtube.

This one must me a sonic boom . You can see the shockwave coming and here the " bang " when the aircraft goes past.

Hi Geoff, jjj and All.
Having been in situations where high speed jet fighters are involved, I'd hate to be on the receiving end.

There is no noise to warn you as it approaches. The jet is on the target and the jet noise follows. Very hard to describe it to anyone who has not experienced it.

A car at 150 klms/hr is heard well before its near. A fighter jet at 0.9Mach and altitude 200m has passed, fired on the target and on its way when the engine noise arrives at your ears.

Re: Geoff's link, notice the pressure wave on the water. It is behind the jet.
Incredible things happen at those near sonic speeds.

Cheers Marty
