Hi guys.

I'm posting this on behalf on an NAS member (not a member of the forum, yet ;)) who has a question about remote webcam setup.

I figured i'd post it here for general comment, as he'll get better collective information from the forums, than just via a single reply from me.

His question:
Is it possible to set up a remote web cam at a inland rural weekender so that observing conditions ( and weather ? ) can be observed via a PC in Newcastle ? On ABC News Radio they often talk about web cam views from around the world that give weather images in real time.

Please if you have any info can you let me know and hardware and software costings would be great.

Thanks in advance.

You certainly can but it will require continuous connectivity to the net (ie. broadband etc.) a dedicated PC (wouldnt have to be powerful or new) and good line filtering (UPS) in the event of bad weather while unnatended, either that or a purpose built web cam but they are expensive to buy and run.

You can make a PC redundant by buying an IP based webcam (like this from ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/RARE-Internet-Network-Webcam-IP-Cam-Security-Camera_W0QQitemZ5843899324QQcategor yZ48629QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmd ZViewItem)). They arent all that expensive, and usually have a webserver etc built into them. Would make things nice, neat and easy!

Or maybe this (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Wireless-Internet-Network-Webcam-IP-Cam-Security-Camera_W0QQitemZ5844623377QQcategor yZ48629QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmd ZViewItem) wireless one, and mount it outside, with a wireless AP inside.
