Hello everyone
I have not acquired hi-res data now for 18 months :mad2: so I thought I had better get some practice in before AIC 2010. With that in mind, I suddenly had an idea that I could do my entire data collection over again - everything :screwy:.

So here is the first (only kidding - I wont flood IIS with repros!).

and attached is my first attempt back in Nov 2008.

LRGB 10.3.3.3. hours, 12.5" RC, AOL Guided

cheers and thanks for looking

We may have to call it a PUGH instead of an ELSID if you intend to post more !!

Anyway it's a good reprocess finer detail in the dust lanes

Great work Martin! Pleasing repro with impressive details toward the nucleus. At first glance, I originally felt the hue was too warm with a subtle magenta cast across the arms. I double checked on another system and its not as pronounced so probably a monitor calibration issue at my end. Don't believe I've seen such an inky back drop presented with this galaxy. Tight with no clipping. It's as though the galaxy is a punctuating exclamation mark with a couple of faint fuzzies scattered around (creates emphasis/focus which I like). Well done. All things going to plan, I'll catch up with you at AIC2010 to hear your presentation.

That's a marvellous repro Martin. It gives a very clear view of the galaxy.

What did you do differently?

Greg.

Hi folks, and glad you liked the repro!

Essentially, in the absence of new data, I have been tweaking, practicing, developing and fiddlin', as you do on those cloudy nights. Some nice new techniques have come out of this, for example I have found a "Shadow and Highlights" parameters together with a specific blend mode that can take a blown out galaxy nucleus and reveal those details (well spotted Jase - see you in October). Of course, I will be sharing some of those techniques at AIC2010.

Actually, there are 3 versions of this repro where I have adjusted the subtle hues (I wont post them of course) and I settled on this version.

thanks again

Martin

Hi Martin,
nice to see you're keeping your hand in!
I still like your original, but the repro has a more rich appearance with velvet black back ground.

Both lovely at any rate with great details.
I guess it would come down to those who love inky black BG's with enlivened colours.. (seems to be the trend at the moment) or lighter charcoal BG's with easy on the eye colours:shrug:
Hell, I don't know.. I'm just a hack;)

Have fun at the Advance Imaging Conference... we'll be wanting a run down on what's discussed please!

All the best
Rich

Congratulations Martin - very deserved.

I've registered for AIC (V Australia make it too cheap at 950 return to LA from Brisbane) so I hope to catch up with you over there (maybe for a cold glass of water or something)

Congratulations again on an excellent image and the APOD

Thanks everybody for the additional posts.

Looking forward to seeing you at AIC Mark - I am working feverishly on my talk and I certainly look forward to sharing a jug of beer.

Wonderful shot Martin. Thanks for sharing some of the background too.

I find it somehow immensely reassuring that Martin Pugh finds it necessary to consider repro'ing his catalogue after coming up with new knowledge and tecniques. There's hope for the rest of us, and just goes to show there's always something new to learn in this great hobby. :)
