NGC 3576 - Emission nebula in Carina in Ha and HaLRGB

Apologies to Peter Ward for this one - for introducing me to this intruguing nebula with his wonderful rendition much earlier in the forum. I couldn't resist "having a look at it" one night in Ha from the city, and was tantalised by some of the loop structure that was visible.

Made time to collect some RGB data to try and get a colour rendition at the SPSP. I was still figuring out "how to do" Ha when this was collected in May, and Wiruna was the first chance I've had to stretch my legs with RGB on the QHY9. Rear hedge and weather frustrated attempts to get more Ha from Brissy, and seemed a shame to shoot Ha at Wiruna. Pretty happy with end result, and gives me confidence to push things further and deeper on future objects.

I was however a bit annoyed and the greeny brown hue around the glowing hydrogen and scratching my head until I looked more closely at Peter's and saw all the wonderful faint brown dust surrounding the field - that's what the greenie brown murk is in my effort if you're wondering...:D

HaLRGB 30:90:30:30:30 (all 10min subs no binning)
QHY9 on the Newt

Have included the original Ha too. Both the colour and Ha slightly cropped down to correct for alignment differences between nights.

Excellent version of this field Rob :thumbsup: the soft look.. looks good and the colours are great with the stars really jumping out at ya.

You have the Rams head pointing to the right, when it points to the left I recon the scene looks more balanced..? :question: :)

Very nice Rob.... Ha is a wonderful filter isn't it. It produces detail which is almost unobtainable with normal RGB.
Great stuff, get that camera working for you.

Pretty good detail in the loops, the Ha jumps out with the mono cameras, I always call this the Garfield nebula as the centre section looks like the two ears and eyes of the comic character.

Thanks Mike. I pondered for quite a while whether to go back and layer the Ha in again to try and tighten up the sharpness. Decided in the end to stay with the softer focus brought in with the RGB - didn't do any deconvolving on the RGB as so little data. I guess it looks reversed due to Newt mirroring versus refractor? :question:



Yes Doug - I've learned to love the wonderful contrast you get on most nebs, but was genuinely surprised just how little extra detail and contrast was added by the Lum data for this one. Luminosity layer in PS ended up being mainly Ha in the end. The loops just wouldn't have come through otherwise. I'm sure you're going to have fun with the new cam and full narrowband.

...but your rendition looks to be mirror reversed

Some imagers seem to get overly possessive of bits of the sky they've just imaged. I was clueless about this beast before your wonderful work must confess.

Hmmm - went back to my original processing, and I seem to have lazily (or just plain silly?) flipped the image vertically when I should have rotated 180 degrees. The universe has been flipped back the way it should be now.....:ashamed:
