Hello all...
Old widefield stalwarts M8 and M20 again in the same FOV.
They get up to the zenith before the wee hours so that I can get my beauty sleep!:P
It's been really cold and clear the last couple of nights which has been great for DSLR high iso imaging.

Combination/blend of 160mins RGB and 120mins Ha data.

Canon 40D (modded)
Canon 300mm f4L @ f4, iso1600
IDAS LPS2 and Astronomik 12nm Ha filters
HEQ5 Pro mount
ImagesPlus, PS CS4

Great colours Doug! I am always a fan of nice pungent hues.

Focus looks nice but could do with some deconvolution and maybe some highlighting of the dark nebulas that run though the area. other than that well done on a "old stalwart image" :D

Very nice rendition Doug . Lovely area that and even with multiple images being posted seems to be less boring than the floodgate flow we get of grand'ol Eta Carina .

Nice shot there Doug :) Plenty of neb, and I too like "extended" colours for some objects. Do you have the Ha component on its to show us? I'm curious given the colour sensor.

Re Ha:
I do Chris - I'll post tonight.
The Ha was a bit of a bleached out affair though at 12x10min.
I also have a 2min sub used as a mask that I'll post too.

Well done Doug, I like it, although the central core region of M8 maybe a tad too bright IMO and smothering the stars there

:camera:I'm sure I don't know what you mean!!!:P

Thanks Mike - don't P off the Eta lovers for gawd's sake!!

Cheers D&B

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I have been considering it Doug - weighing up the CCD v's DSLR thing too.
If I went CCD it would make sense to get a scope - just too hard mucking about with adapters etc and trying to marry filters up with lenses!!

Thanks Paul

Ta Trevor - core suffering from overwhelming Ha blend I think. I don't mind it too much though - I like a little bit of power coming from my cores!
I always think the trapezium in a lot of M42 pics look strange and overprocessed sometimes.

That's a speccy image there Doug! With all that data, the image is yielding that fancy 'deep' look with intricate detail. Well done sir!

Thanks Michael. I've been reviewing the high res image on my crappy Acer monitor at work and it looks a bit soft to me - any thoughts?

Thanks Doug - I received your message :)

Interesting indeed. Ha capture with a DSLR has to be reasonably difficult to pull off - it's such a strong filter. I wouldn't have thought that they were sensitive enough to build that much detail. Obviously they are. :) Thanks for showing me, and I'll try to do some Ha DSLR time this coming weekend as I'll be on that set of objects building on my own QHY-9 M20/8 data set.

Of course, it's all been ruined now with your latest Simpsonesque revelation....

I thought that the hair was a bit more ... well... this fella...

Very nice Chris!
Re the Ha response of DSLRs - when they tell you it can't be done, verify it for yourself!! Just takes more exposure time to fill the wells!!
I've just bought an SII filter to test this theory!

Great work Doug. Colour confidence shines through with this image. The high saturation suits the field, especially M20. Stars show some alternating colour casts, but doesn't distract from scene. Well done.

Well, both of those are rubbish, over and under stretched , but I like the original colour image, very smick :D.

But, Fred they're not processed at all - they are the combined stacks of the Ha filtered subs from the 40D. Obviously the first one is totally blown out, but the point of posting them was to illustrate (for Chris) the Ha response of the DSLR not to present either image as a final result.

They worked out not too badly though when I blended them with the RGB to produce that final colour image you liked;).

Doug,

Fabulous effort, there. Pushing the DSLR to the limit, eh! Go on, buy a full frame CCD! :D

You're going to hate this, as it's something I've been identifying in a few of your images, but, I think you have a colour cast over your image, again. Sorry! It's most noticeable in the star field surrounding the nebulae, it appears as a magenta or red. Could this be the hydrogen alpha portion of the blend? I'd have expected the stars to be a bit golder, that's all.

Otherwise, you're cookin' with gas. And, then some!

More, please.

H

I removed a bit of the red cast as suggested...
