Hi all :hi:

I am now the proud owner of a new 10" dob. as of yesterday.

It was clear last night (after ages) so I even got to use my scope the same day (the skies must like me).:D I see lots of colours in stars now which has really excited me.. red, orange, blue, all popping out at me! :D

Still have lots of mods to do to it so I can pull it a long on wheels (turns out the trolley was a bad idea for me. I tried it out at the store; both together was more IT than me :mad2:, and hubby & I saw bad visions of me being pinned down under it. :help: Also putting a handle under the tube so I can pull it up and down easier.

I also noticed, I'm a lot warmer outside now too... it's so big next to me that it acts as a great barrier against the extremities!

I wonder if one day I will think this scope is too small .

Thankyou to all those that helped me with input and guidance into getting this scope .

Suzy.

Congratulations Suzie.
You know, instead of dragging your new scope outside all the time, you could just house it permanently in an observatory.;) :P :)

Thank you Tony, David, Ron, & Nettie. :)

I may as well get one of those observatory thingies... hubby keeps locking me out of the house when I'm outside and I have to bash the door down at stupid hours of the morning! :mad2:

About a month ago, I left the sliding glass door open to our pergola, and just closed the sliding screen door in front of it as I went out for the nights observing. Some time during that evening, my wife closed the sliding glass door behind the screen door. As I didn't know about this minor detail, I went to walk back inside at about 1am that morning - opened the screen door and walked face first straight into the glass door

Suzy - congratulations on the 10". Wheels are an excellent idea. Bunnings has some great wheels - but they're expensive. I think the ones Im using were about $33 each. I had a 10" dob for years and loved it.

Congratulations Suzy!!! Wonderful news indeed, you will have a ball, and wont need to get another scope again.

Ouch! Did you see stars?!:rofl:
Oh, but seriously, that would have hurt! It's a dangerous hobby this one. You manage to escape the attacks of nocturnal creatures, and tripping over things in the dark, only to find that your own home gets you.

Thank you Dean.
What kind of wheels did you end up getting and how's the performance over grass?

Liz, :thanx:. Yes, this scope is definitely it for me (urrrr, for a dob anyway):D. Would you believe, the night before picking up my scope, I had a dream that I needed to get a 6" refractor, I even heard myself say out loud "aperture fever". :screwy:  Hubby told me to wake up so I would stop waffling... poor guy he even has to put up with me talking about this stuff in my sleep.

It's amazing how well the weather is working with me since I got it (2 nights in a row of clear skies and looks set for the same again tonight). I remember with my first scope, having to wait about 10 days before being able to use it for the first time.

I'm afraid that this is a given, when you come to the Astrofest (you've registered, right?) you will start to eye those 16+ scopes with more than a little envy.

Congratulations, a 10" is a good size to begin to see the universe with new eyes.

A 10 inch scope is great... A 12 inch is only another 2 inches, 20%... 1/5.. a tichy bit more... :D

Congratulations!

I am sure you will enjoy the rewards of a bigger scope despite the struggle. I upgraded to a 12" myself and I am looking forward to my first dark sky with it.

It will be interesting to hear your future experiences with the increased aperture.

:lol::lol: I think I gave you guys too much ammunition .... oh dear, so walked in to that one :lol::lol:.

Roger, I need to smack you with my new weapon  (tis amazing what adrenalin and the imagination of being a super hero can do with a 10" tube directed at you) :P

Thankyou Tony, Eric & Wade.

Rom... 12"?? what the heck are you trying to do to me :eyepop:

Congratulations Suzy
10" is a fantastic size, as long as you can cope with the physical aspects of moving it around. Heres a link to the thread regarding the trolley I use. I have since ditched the foam bit and made up a little plywood jigger that I bolted to the trolley in its place. Works really well!

Congrats Suzy on your new baby - and on getting to try it first night!

Rats. I managed to forget I closed the security screen door after me one night, and later powered into it full speed in the dark. Everyone at work wanted to know what the blood and cross-hatch pattern on my nose was for a week ...
(at least I know Crimsafe is as strong as they say now, and surprised the neighbours didn't call the police the amount of noise I made at 1am bouncing off it... :D)

To Craig, Leon, Kevin, Malcolm, Carl, Jen, Rob, Patrick & Stephen- thankyou all so very much for your wonderful replies. :)

Malcolm, thanks for the link, I had a look, but wouldn't be suitable as I need to move the scope & mount together. The scope is too heavy for me to pop into the base each time I want to move it around the yard (I move around a lot because of trees). But I appreciate your help anyway. ;)

Sorry for the late response. The wheels are the type that have a square mounting plate with 4 screw holes in it. The wheels are about 2 1/2" in diameter, and have a locking lever that locks the rotation of the wheel as well as the wheel's axial rotation. I only drive my scope across pavers and haven't tried these wheels on grass. Certainly they're easy to mount under the base of a dob, but the scope really needs to be up on blocks when it has been put into position. This is especially so if you're using an Argo etc where pointing accuracy is important (ie. you don't want wheels moving slightly this way and that as you point the scope).

I guess you might be better off with pneumatic wheels if you have to drive (slowly) over grass. I know that there are JMI and Scopebuggy solutions that you may be able to copy if hubby is a welder :D

:) Thanks Phil, but I have decided scopes that will cause my nose to bleed and my ears to pop are off limits to me. :P:lol:

Thanks for the info Dean. Yep, hubby is a welder.:D

:lol::lol::lol:
Okay, here's the secret.....
First you have to find a dog with one grey hair on its ear and pluck it out, then a snail (alive) with a broken shell (you breaking it doesn't count), then an ancient artifact from the tomb of king Tutt, a nail clipping from a bird with a golden feather, a lock of hair from Jon Bon Jovi, a fragment of martian rock that landed in the arctic, put all these items in a pot of boiling water for 2 hours, then mash and rub onto the scope tube, whilst it's drying, run around the yard in your birthday suit yelling "skies be clear" 5 times.
Let me know how you go. Should be able to google or ebay most of this stuff. ;) We all know it's worth the trouble just to get to use our scopes straight away, right?!:lol:

You can substitute with a tea spoon of jam made with a single hair from Princess Diana.

:lol::lol::lol::rofl::rofl::rofl:

See below for a substitute.....

:eyepop: I did tell you google and ebay wouldn't be a problem :P

Somewhere back at the beginning of this thread we were talking about new telescopes???? :D

What eyepieces do you have Suzy? Perhaps an upgrade is warranted now? Edit - I just looked at your sig - Pentax XW, Vixen LVW - looking good! Maybe a Panoptic 27mm?
