Jupiter July 1st, the evolving disturbance in oval BA region

Hi All,

Have very unfavorable condition here for imaging with cloud and jetstream howling.

Just on speck got up this morning at 3am local and there was a very large cloud free area around Jupiter.
Captured my first RGB with the the evolving disturbed region to the west of oval BA, right on the CM. I was able to capture data for about 40 minutes before it totally clouded over again. We are predicted to have some rain today.


I have attached an RGB and 2 IR 807nm images as well as an animation of the 4 IR images captured over the 40 minute session. My first RGB was my best, I have been rather heavy handed with my sharpening to try and best reveal the changes in structure. It really is amazing to compare these images with those that I captured June 28th, the changes are quite dramatic.

That jetstream seems to be pushing a long way north this year, be a few unhappy campers around I'd say.

Thanks Lester, but it is more a reflection on my new camera. The frame rate that it can run at means that even throwing away 1000 frames per channel I can still stack 8 or 9 hundred per channel and end up with a presentable result.



Thanks Troy, I should have run another set of data aligning on Ganymede, but put in most of my time trying to highlight the structure in the wake of BA, without over cooking it.

Nice image Trevor. I arose this morning expecting clear skies only to find fog. So that killed that idea. Would be nice to get some clear and still conditions to capture the disturbance near Oval BA. With Jupiter at quadrature the coming months an increased size should help with gathering sharper details of this disturbance.

Thanks very much Paul, good point regarding the opportunities to better resolve this detail as the apparent dia increases.

Oval BA is available again tomorrow (Sunday) morning but the jet stream chart looks atrocious. I plan on making an attempt though.

The jetstream has dealt us a bad hand up north. I'm not happy lol:sadeyes: The 3 Jupiter images I've posted so far this apparition, I wouldn't even class as 'runs on the board':shrug:

I note the jet is travelling south again, & will remain there for a few days if not longer.

Anyway, I may not reply to many posts these days but rest assured I do look;) You're doing a great job mate & your dedication reminds me of me when I was learning the 'planet imaging ropes' < Not suggesting you're still learning, you certainly have a handle on it now:thumbsup:

I hope to be able to pull the trigger on Jupiter within the next few days to see if I can 'keep in the running' :lol:

Thanks John, not sure what possessed me with my initial processing on this RGB, when I went back and looked at it latter I felt a bit embarrassed.

Don't think I will ever stop learning this trade, reckon we all keep striving for more from our capture setup and processing regime. Looking around here and on other forums I think the quality of images is steadily improving, the bar keeps being lifted higher.

Look forward to seeing more from you as we head toward opposition, but also looking forward to the jet resuming a more traditional path.
