Hi all,

Just been thinking about comet Hale Bopp. I cant find anything current on the net. So a couple questions...

Where would it be in the sky right now?
How many AU would it be from the sun?
What would its current magnitude be? Im guessing approx +20?

and

Do you think it would it be possible to get a photo of?

Would make a good challenge to try capture a photo of it! Would be nice to see again what im sure all of us would consider an old friend!

Thanks,

Jase

So, yes, a photo is within the realms of possibility. How good is your gear? :P

As far as i know they photographed this comet only a couple of years back and it's still active.

Wow mag 20.1 what a guess! I should buy a lotto ticket!

I dont have any gear, dont even have a scope still, so will rely on you guys with gear to give it a shot if you can.

Excuse my ignorance but what is CdC? Is this it? http://www.stargazing.net/astropc/doc/eindex.html

Jason,

CdC is Carte du Ciel (Map of the Sky) - it's a free astro program that tracks heavenly objects so that we know where to look in the night sky

And a bonus if u can capture the Heavens Gate spaceship following in the comets tail :screwy::screwy:

I give a big wrap. If you install all the add-ons it's really comprehensive and it's enough to use. It even has scope control capabilities but I have no idea how good it is.

Heres some interesting ones and confirmed what i was talking about.

http://arxiv.org/abs/0803.1505 for Hale-Bopp,

i just found out that they imaged it this year with the Herschel telescope
http://www.observadores-cometas.com/Herschel/Image_of_the_day/image_of_the_day.htm

Interestingly enough they imaged 1P/ Halley as well (below)

The information was gathered from comets-ml, hope this helps!

Cheers!
