well i still have a few reprocesses to go but i am getting happy with it. The moment of maximum coverage as seen from Wallsend.

Had to contend with rain and cloud, dog and RB, but i managed to get this - thank goodness it cleared for this phase:lol:

i know i have to fix the outer edge on the right - next repro

EDIT--> FINAL REPRO IS HERE (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/attachment_browse.php?a=78955)

Dave,

That is magnificent!

Well done; the subtlety is what makes it so appealing.

Awesome. :)

thanks H - i stll have to redo from scratch to fix up the right side

You mean the slight glow? I'm viewing on my iPhone at the moment and it looks the goods to me. I'll view on a monitor soon.

I like it, anyways!

not quite - the over exposed section on the far right

Omaroo
27-06-2010, 01:30 PM
Top shot there David. In retrospect, I wish that I had exposed for the shadowed area instead.

h0ughy
27-06-2010, 01:40 PM
thanks CHris, i covered every exposure from 2.5 sec through to 1/2000 sec very quickly - all under 45sec:lol:;)

Jen
27-06-2010, 03:42 PM
:lol: I did that too Houghy  Its the first time ive used this camera to take pics of the moon so i had no idea what i was doing :rofl:

Great image Dave - did you combine the exposures manually or did you use HDR?

Looks like it is coming along nicely, David. Can't wait for the repro.

No chance of doing that here:

That's superb, Dave! Definitely a keeper!

I see what you mean about the far RHS but to be honest it doesn't detract from it too much. If you gave fix that on the next Sid then it'll be a really impressive shot!

I love it! Well compressed I say!

did another repro - though i am not sure i like it? the right side is still there but now i realise why it is that aqua green colour - earths ozone layer - i caught that in my total eclipse shot two years ago. DOH.........

i used a programme called photomatix pro to make the initial hdr type image from the 26 raw shots then into Pixinsight for some background cleaning up and noise reduction then into photoshop for some resizing

Jen

righto - another tweak

Like the first one, Dave. Technically I suppose the second one is more natural, but the detail in the first one gives it a real punch!

I'm with Al, the first one has plenty of crunchy detail, and doesn't look as over cooked as the last (my opinion). Having said that the dark side detail is best in the last but I would still pick the first.

Big Dave

Nice, I missed the maximum with hail. Great detail and nice colour gradient.
Artistically I vote for the original version; if you were running a pole.

thanks for the input guys and gals. I need to slightly fix up the first shot to remove some of the noise - and clean up my HDD as i have far too many Repros

ok have taken on board all the comments and have trashed everything i have done except for the first shot - now cleaning that up for noise

A ver nice Dave. I have data for the darkened side and the light side within seconds but need to work out how to do the mask. You got any tips?

Lovely work and like you I got the pink too, but unlike you the green.

Dave, The first one hit my eye, the others not so much.
well done

h0ughy
27-06-2010, 09:45 PM
HONEST - this is my final repro of this - fixed up the noise issues of the first shot.

Paul - i dumped the cr2 raw files (26 of them) into Photomatix Pro then saved as a 16 bit tiff - processed that in Pixinsight (dynamic background extraction and ACDNR reduction with a slight unsharp mask) then resized in photoshop for the web

Paul Haese
27-06-2010, 09:48 PM
So how did you get the colour to come through. I have the HDR image but the colour is not present in the HDR but the red is certainly visible in the over exposed image. Your last image looks the best I reckon.

David, you have captured the eclipse very well. Not visible here this time, and your pics are far better than what was shown on the TV news! (Not surprisingly).

no worries Paul - i took nearly 16 gig of data like that - capturing it all up until 10pm - when i ran out of storage LOL

glad you liked it Chris - it wouldnt be what it is without the help of RB - his guiding light gave me this image

I agree with Molly. On my monitor your last repro is much greener, and I think the first one seems "cleaner" if I can put it that way. Again only my opinion.

Good work all round.

great stuff dave.. lunar eclipse shots look so simple, but for shots like this i know neither the imaging nor the processing are easy! you are certainly weilding some nice touch with your processing skills.. impressive.

me.. well.. um.. i missed (forgot) most of it... had been pretty cloudy but caught the last twenty minutes in clear sky once i realised what i'd been missing!

That looks great Dave. the limb has been finally squared away, the green cast in the penumbral shadow has been contained and definition is much clearer, less hazy. At least that is how it looks from my monitor (a somewhat dodgey CRT :)).

the two added images – one sequence for 9.28pm and another for 8.46pm made up of 32 and 31 shots respectively. Stacked in Photomatix, processed in Pixinsight for DBE, ACDNR reduction and mask moon to lift background, then into Photoshop for colour correction and detail enhancement – quite a simple process really…..

Excellent work David !!
Congratulations on IOTW, well deserved indeed.
This last shot you posted is gorgeous, lovely subtle hues in there.

I had the privilege of dropping in on Dave on the night of the eclipse, since I was driving back from Newcastle, he invited me over to see his setup and the man in action. :D

Had a great time, even though it was just a short visit.
David's setup is awesome and the observatory is perfect, I didn't expect it to be so roomy.

Here's a couple of shots I took on the night with my dinky little Nokia phone.
LOL it's the only shot of the eclipse I got on the night. :D

Thanks for having me over Dave.

the mid eclipse shot is bugging me - i still cant get it right. I have now tried various different methods - now another one.

Tried a method of stacking with aligning with Photomatix, and a special masking technique with pixinsight to not lift the bright side of the moon. Is it any better - if not can you suggest what to do?

Overall there are 25 images stacked in this image repro #13

firstlight
07-07-2010, 10:00 PM
David! Paralysis by analysis!

I do have to say that this last repro has finer detail, and there is more to see in the shadow than the penultimate one. It seems to me that there is a greenish cast in the penumbra, but all in all a mighty piece of work. I have no real ability when it comes to colour balancing and such, but maybe back a little off the green channel? Might muck the rest of it up so it might be best to leave it.

Breathe deep, still the mind young grasshopper.

h0ughy
07-07-2010, 10:07 PM
Tony as an image processor i am a mug. Nooo Idea what i am doing - or why for that matter?

michaellxv
07-07-2010, 11:28 PM
Looks like you have found the right balance. IMO the penumbra colour is the penumbra colour. The detail in the shadow is excellent and you have the bright side under control.

Fly by the seat of your pants processing - LOL nothing like it. Each time you have a stab at it you get a different result:D
