View Full Version here: : Ruby Crucis
Have been checking out this beautiful little carbon star (again) and note that its not as red as usual. Does anyone know the time period for this star, and any idea when its next at its dimmest (reddest).
I have had quite a look on The Net, but not too much info??

Not much on this one that's for sure.
Suprised AAVSO had nothing & next to nothing in the GCVS, only info I could find are these...

Even the most recent is over a year old...

Bit on the irregular side so hard to predict.
Justin.
No worries, thanks Justin, will check them out, and hope for a few more suggestions. :)

Search Liz for ESB365 and see if that helps.
Cheers Kev.

So fainter than mag 9 at the moment? I was looking at it tonight in 12x60 binos. Once I learned what I was looking for, I have never have trouble picking it out with binos down to 10x50. It's a beauty!

Hi Liz,
Some years ago I found this information that maybe useful, but not it's period, that would be indeed handy to know.
"Ruby Crucis" coined by JANITA HILL from ASSA, Discovered to be variable by FRASER FARRELL ASSA in 1990, range 8.6-12 vmag.
Regards
PeterM.
Discovered to be a variable in 1990 - goodness.
A site that Justin gave has the magnitudes over a period of time similiar to above ranges, but will have to become familiar with the Julian date calandar to get a rough time period.
Had alook at the graph for ESB http://www.kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp/vsnet/gcvs2/CRUDY.html
and looks like it has about a 17month period ... which, extremely rough ..... had it peaking in mag ~ late 2009 so should be getting dimmer/redder until early 2011. That could all be totally wrong as not a mathematician/astronomer.
