View Full Version here: : Cold!!

We were warned by the BOM that it was going to be a little chilly this morning but -4deg C in our little valley is crazy! White and ice everywhere. For Perth this is almost unheard of.
Tomorrow is suposed to be much the same so its going to be cool in the evening for the partial luna eclipse.

I always wondered why Perfff gets so cold at night in winter - quite a bit colder than Melbourne. It's on the coast, has warmer sea temps than Melbourne and is much further north...

i live in Inverell and it gets into the -4 or more here during winter sucks but i still get my scope out lol

Since installing my weather station we've had an average of about 10-16 nights blow zero every year, several as low as -4. However since moving the weather station from on top of the roof to under the patio 2 years ago it's never got below -2, and this morning it was -2 degrees! cold alright.

Birdbaths frozen solid, frost, ice, .. like you say Wade.

... and yes, not looking forward to the eclipse tomorrow night! I'm going to be sticking it out for the 5 hours to get the full sequence but it's shaping up to be quite an endurance test!!

Roger, why would you put a weather station under a patio:question:
There is a temperature difference even between the thermomitor on my verender and the one on my weather station on the top of my observatory.
Your weather station under the verender will not give you a proper reading:shrug:

:eyepop:Had no idea you guys have it so cold in Australia over winter. Here in Auckland we've not had negative temps since I came here (last 7 years).

I'm originally Danish though, so it's not like cold scare me off. I've often
been out all night in -15 or colder. It sure makes it fun to carry all the ice-cold metal gear in afterwards when it literally sticks to your skin... :D

rogerg

Well, to clarify ... the rain and wind are above the patio, the temp and other just under the roof of the patio. It was on the roof of the house, but that was significantly affected by the roof (reading hot in summer). So I moved it to the next best location I had :)

I should rig up a stronger bracket to hold the temp stuff out from under the patio I guess, but just haven't got to it :) At the moment extra shading (pot saucers with holes in them) is rigged up over the temp sensor to shade it more, and as the bracket isn't strong enough to hold it I have that hung partially from the roof of the patio to take weight off the flimsy plastic bracket :) It is litterally right on the edge of the patio.

Ah... the looxury (please insert broad Yorkshire man accent:P) of being close to the sea!

Today feels cold here, but the facts from my weather station say otherwise... its allegedly 8.5°C! I can't wait till this WA cold weather gets here and we can have a proper winter!;)

So far this month we've had 8 air frosts, 2 days of snow and the minimum temp was -5.9°C... and we are less than 100km from the ocean (and Sydney) as the crow flies.:)

Perth is down to 5C at 8:15pm..... 2C colder than same time last night ;) Meanwhile at 10:15pm here it's 11C.....with rain

Still dont get how the hell Perth can get so cold when they are much further north than Melbourne, right on the coast, with warmer sea temps....it doesn't make sense. Last time I saw white grass here was about 5 years ago!

rogerg
25-06-2010, 10:34 PM
well, outside here (under my patio, as previously discussed ;)) it's 2.3 degrees at 8:32 WST. Chilly one tonight.

 not really sure sorry. Certainly the hills here are regularly colder in winter and hotter in summer. While I have many nights below zero the Swan Coastal Plain has few if any (normally).

Coldest here is 0.6 so far. Coldest in the city is 3.6C......come'on old man winter, give us a nice hard frost. So rare, it's as fun as a 45C day ;)

@rogerg, that's cold....I thought it was bad seeing 2.5C at 1am, let alone at 8.30! Someone must know why Perth can get so cold, while even Hobart struggles to see such temps!

rogerg
25-06-2010, 11:43 PM
0.9 degrees now here, and time for me to call it a night. I will be sure to report how cold it gets in the morning :)

Of course all this is nothing comapred to what Canberrian's must have every night!

In Melb I had 3 days this week where all the cars and lawn were iced up.(all ice melted by 9am) I get up at between 5am and 6am. I have had the scope covered in ice as well.

Umm... there's a specific reason why the thermometer reads higher when under cover (think along the lines of "radiation" or radiant heat/energy, and I'm not talking about the house or patio)...

First person to explains it wins... (Hint: Think Thermodynamics)...

I'll give a second hint if noone gets it soon... (A "google-able" hint, is that a word?)...

rogerg

Yeah I know, and there's specific reasons it reads higher on top of a tile roof too :) Like I said, trade-offs and so on, I'm not measuring the beuro's weather for them so it'll do until I make it better :)

Here we go again!! By 9.30pm last night it was one deg. and we woke up to -4.5 deg. C, white everywhere and any standing water frozen solid.
Haven't seen this since I left home in the Otways (Vic.). Most unusual for this area.Tomorrow warmer with a min. of 4 deg the BOM says.
I have had the fire on for two hours and I can still touch the fire box without a hint of being burnt.
Down the hill on the coastal plain Pearce registered a min of 1.0 deg. big difference over only 7 km.

about 8C here at 1:30am, same as Sydney. Perth n Adelaide are down into the 4's ;)

For all you frost bitten Perfs, go to Rottnest Island, overnight min temps there are bottoming out about 10-12C warmer than youse on the mainland

Perth last night = -0.6C
Rottnest Island = 10.5C

That area does seem to get pretty cold, along with Scoresby, but here in Berwick not so much.

That fatefull night here at secret harbour (im 1.4km as the crow flies from the ocean) it measured 1.2degrees at 4:53am. Being so close to the ocean i was quite surprised at this temperature!

Bring it on I say :D all the better for the CCD chips in use (yes i was imaging at the time too)

Horsham got down to -1.2 at 6:30am. Still cold but not as cold as Mount Hotham.

Ahhh not cold yet boys.....When it's below -10C, then it starts to get cold.
I remember a few months ago and I went out in -18C with just a T shirt and Trakky daks. I was dusting snow off the car. My fingers were the only thing cold.
I am now "winterized" to -25C. I don't mind +10C days now. After coming from -10C to +10C in one day, +10C feels like a summers day anymore.

And my 'new' 2nd hand Televue Genesis 102mm was due to arrive today.

So, yes, it's all my fault!

Gotta love these traditional Victorian winters. 7 days forecast calls for...yeah you guessed it :help::( :mad2: :mad2:

I don't think my thermometer exceeded 8C all day, but for some reason it felt no colder than your stock 14C Melbourne day.

Exactly!! I've told her to wait until Nov-Dec. I've always found that the worst time of year. The temperature rises but more importantly the humidity kicks in and I have trouble sleeping. I'm tired and grumpy (and apologies in advance for those flame posts :P). By Jan-Feb I'm used to it and back to my cheery self :D.

Lots of -3 temps in western Sydney this morning. Even a -5 at Richmaond

You'd expect something like that from Melbourne, but I've never seen temps that low here. Weird.

I meditate (briefly) in an office type room that is small and easily warmed by the same heater here at home (thermostat), yet it feels so much colder these past few weeks (this year). I mean colder yes but it's heated the same way. I still get 22C in that room.

Quite sure despite temp. being equal if the longwave out is massive proportionally to our warm short wave energy in then we feel the cold much much more (and deeper) it just hasn't been recognised yet.

Bird, how do you defrost the scope without get all the gear wet? i.e the mirror/s, camera, lenses, puter etc.
I ask because the other night that I went out, my scope became heavily dewed. I didn't notice really until I put my hand on the tube and it was soaking wet!

Hi Bart...

I don't :-( Everything gets soaked, but it all seems to survive. The heater on the secondary keeps it clear, and the primary is 1.8m down the tube so it's normally out of reach of the dew and stays clear. The camera generates a few watts of heat and keeps itself clear as well, but everything else gets soaked.

I normally leave the scope uncovered for a few hours after unrise so it can dry out before I cover it up :-)

Trev - thanks :-)

cheers, Bird
