As anyone tried to install the new iOS 4 update yet?
I tried and now I dont have a working phone.
Went through the download/install path and the update stop 1/2 way through. Will have to try and restore the iPhone tonight.

Yep - did mine early this morning after downloading and upgrading iTunes to v9.2 on my iMac, and backing up the phone as instructed.

Worked flawlessly... No halting, apart from the progress bar on the phone remaining almost static for about 4 minutes at one stage - but it kept going without a problem. I assume it was verifying packages at the time.

I luuuuuuuurve iOS4. Here are all of my apps on the one page now. Fantastic. I'm just setting up my VPN connections to work. Multitasking ma have taken a while to come, but it looks to work smarter than any other implementation I've seen in Win, Palm, BB or Android systems. I've yet to see what it does to batteries, but looks and works just great. I also notice that 802.11 performance is tons better - and YouTube just flies again.

Looks like a handy feature to group apps together like that, will have to look into upgrading...

Bit of a PITA Adrian when that happens, but it looks a nice upgrade when you get it working.
Good luck

mine is still updating, over 1hr since I clicked the button. crazy.

Out of interest, are you guys on Win or OSX machines? Did you upgrade to iTunes v9.2 first?

sejanus
22-06-2010, 02:11 PM
I'm on osx - 9.2 itunes is a manatory upgrade - it does it before installing the actual phone update

Omaroo

So - did it finish?

sejanus
22-06-2010, 02:21 PM
yeah took about 90mins but I think a fair bit of that was copying back the music/podcasts - it actually completely formats the device by the look of it during the update.

Omaroo
22-06-2010, 02:24 PM
Don't think so, as I have around 11Gb of music and my whole upgrade took around 8 minutes - but I have no podcasts on the device. I don't assume that would have anything to do with it, but hey - it's a mystery for sure.

i have about 12gb and for a long time it showed a dialog saying restoring music or something like that

Gav,

I had the same thing happen to me a little while ago.

My iPhone crashed whilst using Google Earth, of all apps. It wouldn't turn off. I had to force a reset and had to resync/restore from backup through iTunes.

I have about 15-20 GB of data on the device and it took about 4 hours to restore everything. Mind you, I have iTunes running on a 5 year old notebook, so, it's slow at the best of times.

Just updated my 3G and all good so far (and updated from a mac)... Functionally it's great but my iPhone 3G is a bit sluggish with this. I'll be buying an iPhone 4 when they're on sale here, and giving my 3G to a friend...

There will be some wrinkles for sure, so expect Apple to put out another update in a month or two, and many app developers likewise.

Updated my 32Gb iPod Touch painlessly on my clunky old work XP PC via iTunes 9.2 - took about 10mins. (Only about 4Gb data to back up though)
Great update - love the Folders

I have iTunes 9.2 installed 2-3 days ago with Win7. I got home and the iPhone is still attempting to install iOS 4. A message on the screen along the lines of
"Couldnt backup Adrian's iPhone because it couldnt start a session"
I will try again a little later after I have restored my phone :mad2:.

Sorry to hear that Adrian. This is a pretty big release, so I suppose that there will realistically be a few problems here and there. I know of two colleagues that did theirs today on Vista-based systems and no problems encountered. Do you run a MobileMe account? I do, and everything is backed up there - so phone restores are painless. Not sure if you can have one with a Wndows system though.

I will get it going. I had managed to back up the phone yesterday in anticipation. I have managed to get the phone restored. I am now trying to reinstall iOS4 and it appears to be going faster than this morning. Fingers crossed.

Managed to install iOS4 only took 1hr 10 mins to install. I like the folders option now I can keep all the c**p in its place. Didnt realise how much I had on the phone until I started to sort the apps out into categories.
Now to wait for the iPhone4 to arrive.

Adrian
PS I cant set the background like the pictures in Chris's posts as I only have the 3G phone not 3GS.

I've been trying to update iTunes for a few weeks now, finishes downloading 100meg and then BOOM, crashes everytime. Grrr.
One more try, then if it fails again try to download 9.2 with installer instead of updating.

EDIT: Wheeee!
Now for iOS4 :)

Cool, so some of the features that jailbreak users have been enoying for a long time, finally make it to the mainstream. :) But I shouldn't gloat, it's a step in the right direction.

I haven't had an iPhone for long (less than a month), but coming from a PC background, I was suprised how restrictive Apple had made it. I'm too use to being able to customise things how I wanted, and I hated the fact I couldn't change the iOS little annoyances I discovered apart from waiting for the next release and hoping.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating everyone do it or anything (not that it's illegal) but I think it's a bit of a shame that it takes jailbreaking an iPhone to unleash it's full potential. The amount of fantastic non-Apple approved applications and iOS feature enhancements various developer communities have made, just blows my mind.

For me I'll be waiting for the next release of my preffered jailbreak application to come out before I upgrade to iOS 4. Then we'll see what this release can really do. :)

The only thing I really want is to be able to link via bluetooth to other devices. I have a cardio Bluetooth communication system between motorbikes and it would be nice to connect the phone to it so I can recieved calls on the go. My wife's nokia works with the Cardio but not the iPhone.

Adrian

Now that telstra as told me the phone is no longer on contract maybe I could look into jailbreaking the phone.

...until the non-standard APIs they're built on suddenly don't work because of an iOS update so substantial as this one....

sejanus

I would have thought it could already do that? I've been pairing my iphone to bluetooth devices for ages

MrB

iOS4 installed and verified on 32gig 3GS in 7mins with 11gig of music, on a lappie with Vista Basic.

It even kept my old splash and made it the background ("The Great Wave (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Wave_off_Kanagawa)")
Now it's time to play :D

AdrianF

I have been playing with the ardio headset and the iPhone for the last 1/2 hour but the phone won't pair with it. It will show up on the bluetooth page on the phone but I keep getting " unable to pair" message. I have also tried to pair with a Blue ant system in the work cars with no success.

Maybe I am doing something wrong but I did RTFM.

Aaaargh damn it!
Doubletap on the home button isn't for the iPod anymore :(
I loved that feature. Didn't matter what app I was using if I needed to change tracks I'd doubletap.

Nevermind says I.... I'll just go re-assign the doubletap in settings and........
Nooooope. I looked everywhere in settings, doubletap is no longer configurable. :mad2:

EDIT:
oops, nevermind... found it.. clever girls and boys at Apple :D

I've done my Itouch last night.
Haven't played with it much since the update, but is it me, or does it take more of an effort (longer time) to select something?

I found switching between songs and menus, I had to push and hold it a little longer than usual.

I've updated.

How do you get the folders?

I have an iPod Touch 2nd Gen 8Gb.

adman

Hi Chillie,

you tap and hold any icon, (like you are going to delete an app), then once they are all wiggling, drag one app on top of another that you would like to have in a folder together, then the folder will be created when you release it.

Took me a while to figure that one out too...:P

Upgraded last night. Took about ten minutes to upgrade and then a further 30 minutes to sync my photos.

My browsing seems a tad smoother, too

Good stuff!

I am trying to get my bluetooth working on my iPhone 3G. I have a bluetooth enabled laptop that I can connect to a nokia phone but cant get the iphone to even find the laptop, still searching. Any one managed to connect their laptops to an iPhone? How you do it?

Adrian

Omaroo
24-06-2010, 12:27 PM
To do what Adrian? Look into its filesystem? To sync wirelessly? I don't think you're able to. Apart from talking to headsets, speakers and keyboards, I don't think you can do much else. It's never been a priority for me, but for some it's probably important. As far as your Cardio system goes, a mate of mine has his Cardio talking to his 3G iPhone on 3.2.3 without issue.

Just downloading 4.0 for an iPod 3G 8GB... looking good so far....

lacad01
24-06-2010, 03:29 PM
Nope, when I first got my iPhone I thought I could transfer data between another Bluetooth enabled phone but no good, my understanding is that it's only good for Bluetooth accessories like hands-free, etc...

Chillie

Thank you Adam. I followed your instructions, and yes it worked. I can't get all the iPod Apps in one folder so I removed them from the folder. Now they're out of order I I can't remember which order they were in.:confused2:

The old version gave me rock solid Wi-Fi signal strength around the house apart from when the microwave was going. Version 4.0 gives me a variable Wi-Fi signal strength and also runs a bit slower. I hope the next version fixes the problem.

Took me little while and a few restores before I thought zone alarm might have been the prob.
Turned off zonealarm and it took about half hour!( including a restore)
easy peezy!
the folders are great!

Henry,

I think I remember reading on CNET that you're limited to 12 applications per folder.

I'm well happy, love the new OS.
Bluetooth has been greatly increased.
Binding between two devices now happens in seconds instead of 30 seconds.
Even more impressive, they now have AVRCP working.
I have a Bluetooth audio module on my home stereo, play my phones iPod thru that, was awesome but now they have fixed AVRCP(Audio Video Remote Control Protocol) I can now control the stereo's volume with the iPhone.
Cheers Apple :D

Jules76
24-06-2010, 08:39 PM
Yeah your right, but you get that with any major OS change. Even though I haven't updated yet, I've noticed quite a few of my applications have quickly released updates. So even if there are problems, the developers are getting on to them nice and quickly.

Unfortunately another Apple imposed limitation. :(

Yea, this new fix rocks . I have one of those stereo Bluetooth tie clip hand free receivers ( $15 from HK on Ebay ) feeding my Ipod Touch into my big stereo HI FI . The lack of volume control really bugged me before. Its awesome to flick through 300 CD's and make playlists all from the palm of my hand .

For that matter the inclusion of ability to make playlists on the ipod and have them synced to your computer is the greatest feature of OS4 for me, and ability to make folders on the home screen comes in second :)

MrB
24-06-2010, 11:56 PM
Hah! I bought one of those too.
I thought my existing Bluetooth audio(A2DP) module was faulty 'coz I had read that the 3GS was AVRCP capable, but the volume control never worked.

It hasn't arrived yet, wondering what I can do with it now.....
The module I'm currently using with the HiFi was pilfered from a large bookshelf speaker system that sounded pretty good(photo (http://akamai.globalsources.com.edgesuite. net/f/593/3445/5d/pdt.static.globalsources.com/IMAGES/PDT/BIG/788/B1002946788.jpg)) so might put it back in that ;)
