Last night using an article in the latest Sky and Space I explored a list of DDouble SStars in the constellation of Orion ....here's some notes :)

Date/Time
17/12/05
20.00 >01.30 WST
Observing site
Home
Conditions
Fine/light breeze/light dew after 23.00
Seeing steady/good , sky darkness influenced by Lunar after 21.00
limiting Mag for much of the evening =4
Telescopes/Eyepieces
10"SCT and 80mm Orion refract or
6mm Radian with SCT 416x/tfov 0.1
9mm Nagler with 80mm 67x/tfov 1.2

Beta Orionis
Easily split with the SCT, the secondary looked to be greenish/ bluish the primary is quite bright which prevented the split with 80mm but noted elongation

Eta Orionis
Nearly same white colour/brightness but split comfortably with the SCT, striking pair. With a tighter separation of 1.7" i thought i could notice some elongation with the 80mm but with barley being able to separate Beta's 9.7" might be mistaken.

Delta Orionis
Wide pair {52.8"} with a faint third component. The Orion displayed a better view , no detection of the third mag 13.7 { :P } companion.

Iota Orionis
Easily split and fine view through the SCT but even finer through the 80mm with M42 on the edge of the FOV and interesting/pleasing star field .

Theta Orionis
Splendid and magnificent system embedded in surrounding nebulosity , all 6 components split with fleeting glimpses of 2-3 fainter stars outside the arrangement within the neb/fov.Through the 80mm equally good but only four stars could be seen .

Sigma Orionis
Nice pattern of 4 stars dominated by the primary , the nearby fainter triple system Struve761 could be seen in the SCT fov, with the 80mm both systems make up nice asterisms in the shape of letter L's

Zeta Orionis
Another example of the primary being quite bright in comparison to its companions. Zeta has a close secondary 2.6" , but could easily separate with the SCT but unable to in the 80mm . The third fainter companion 57.3' away is a easy target .

These stars where the main ones i looked out but the following were some more I logged
Lambada orionis
Tau Orionuis
Epsilion orionis
Betelguese = very tough , unable to split , only with a LPI imager have i done it.
Rho Orionis = the only reddish star encountered though the tour

To top of the evenings session I spent a while viewing Saturn . The best view combination was with a 14mm through the SCT yielding 178x . Cassini division clearly seen , 2 bands noted with a slight grayish tinge top the polar region. Four moons circled north of the planet in the FOV with a brighter one the south and left and twice the distance in the FOV .... checked cartes du ceil and came up with Titan the brightest with Tethys/Doine/Rea and Encelade the others .

Pleasant nights viewing , aside from the mozzies and a Black Eyed peas song {humps} circulating in my head it was a great night :) :) :) :)

Great review Stuart. Hopefully your fine viewing will be contagious and we'll catch some of it over here.

Nice report Stuart. Impressive split of A through F of Theta Orionis, with glimpses of others - great performance for an SCT.

Cheers
