Here's my latest effort taken last Saturday night this past long week-end from wiruna. Bloody cold night. -3c at 2:00am. Shot with the ED80 and the WO P-FlatIV. 5 panels of approx. 1h each in 5 min subs.

It's better than my first attempt at it, the field is wider too and maybe more interesting coz this time I knew were to shoot...sort of :P

Although a bit noisy because it would need a lot more data I'm very happy with the colors this time and the way the mosaic turned out. There's a couple of reflections from nearby Antares too but I don't care. I still like the picture as a whole. :)

There's a bigger version here (http://memkxw.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pI8ptRETlGAiYSV9jlEH_v3XDs79R6MNl hJd19AQyUXEze9FADibz7oIFOYrEqDJRR5D Wgq5J0gWiFv_kLgTgeMMnViyaj0ps/RhoOph_pano_ff.jpg?psid=1). [2.5MB]

Hope you like it too.

-3C huh? Ooooh cold, did ya have a freezer suit? You could get you, a bottle of red and your lappie into mine :D

Nice going, yes some more exposure would always be good but I see why you are happy with it

Such a great area to image...err?..but I haven't yet

Wow Marc, that is a sensational image. You are indeed the Mosaic King.

The blue reflection nebula to the top right has what appears to be an elliptical shaped wave of very light blue. Is that the neb or is it a processing artifact? I haven't seen that wave before.

Greg.

Fantastic effort Marc - you've captured the subliminal beauty of the whole region and stitched it all together seamlessly!! Wonderful colours and nicely processed!! I can see 2 elliptically shaped light blue areas on the left side - are these real features? They have quite a distinct boundary.

Thanks David.

Thanks JJJ.

 Thanks Mike. Nup - don't have a freezer suit. Your's very cool indeed. I believe I could also fit the tent + the scope in there. For now I ran back and forth in between the house fire place and the scope. I can't stand the cold anymore. Was born in the mountains and I've endured two life times of cold. :cold: That's why I moved to Oz :sunny:

Thank you Peter. Colours are great in this area. I love the super saturated shots of this area on the web. I wish I could have pushed my data harder but it doesn't allow it. I'll do it with the hyperstar next and hope to shoot more of the area and faster. With more photons in I'll be able to really pop all those colors. :)

Thanks Greg. It was a hard yakka to blend and stitch all these believe me but I seem to have a consistent routine that works now. These clear elliptical edges are reflections from antares, mostly in the blue channel. I can't get rid of them. Unless I offset or shoot from the other side of the meridian and do a difference map or data rejection. Couldn't bother with the ED80. Too slow to collect data. Might do it with the hyperstar though. But I reckon I'm in for a whole new type of reflections with that one too. :P

Thanks David  Yep as explained above they are reflections. I might process them out or dim them in PS later on for a repro.

sensational marc.. you've done a great job on the mosaic. how have you laid out five frames.. is the fifth one in the middle to cover the join between the other four images?

colours look great too.. there's nothing easy about that either. more data sure.. tell me about it ;)

Thanks Tom. Your earlier shot of the clouds of Ophiuchus is what got me off my backside and really interested in this area so thanks for the inspiration and glad you liked this rendition. I wanna try to do much better than that though as far as colors and field goes.

Thanks Phil - I have one overlaid in the middle that I shot on the other side of the meridian to get some halos out of the middle of the frame so it's in the center and you can really tell. Here's the original panels arrangement I started from.
