Does anybody know exactly when this starts ... have heard 8.30 then 9.30pm?? Havent been able to find much info on the Net re start times.
Wonder what time for Townsville?? Thanks. :)

Rob_K
20-06-2010, 12:19 PM
Liz, for Townsville first contact will be about 8:20pm with the Moon at 35 deg altitude, maximum eclipse about 9:45pm, and second contact about 11pm with the Moon at 71 deg altitude. Times are give or take a coupla minutes, just estimated them by running the partial eclipse through Starry Night for Townsville location.

Cheers -

Been cloudy and raining here all day.
Can see a very fuzzy moon through the cloud cover at the moment, but I don't think it will clear anytime soon.

Got the LX200 10" setup with the Canon 300d ready to take some time laps shots. All clear and still here in Aselaide. This is the first time I have tried this so keep ya fingers crossed for me. I am using DSL Shutter to take shots a 7 sec intervals.. I have tested the setup and it worked fine today. I guess thats a disaster in the making tonight :D.. I hope to be able to stick all the pics together to make a time laps movie... All alot of fun anyway... For once its a clear night in Adelaide..

good Luck all

I think I got some good ones, downloading now. We had some scattered and floating clouds, then just at 2055 started to come over. Was it about 40% totality - didn't seem as much as 50%?

spacezebra
26-06-2010, 09:10 PM
Yes, just a hint of red.

Cheers Petra d.

Dammit... I thought that I could get away with binoculars, but ended up going the whole schmeer - G11, Tak Sky-90 and 40D- all set up in a blind panic. LOL!!!

Results in as soon as the run is done.

The figures in CdC suggest a bit more than half covered at 21:38.

"Date";"Max.";"Type";"Saros";"Gamma";"Magnitude";"Magnitude";"Partial";"Totality"
" 2010 Jun 26";"11:38";" P ";"120";"-0.709";"1.603";" 0.542";" 82m";" - "

The time is UTC. I think the 0.542 is the coverage.

There were a lot of moving clouds, but I rather like the effect. I will be putting a larger file on my Flickr but not till morning.

There's not much red in it at all, its quite a dark eclipse, even for a partial. The last time I saw a dark eclipse like this was in the early 1990's not long after Mt Pinatubo had blown and we had a total in the evening that was all grey, no red at all.

michaellxv
26-06-2010, 09:40 PM
I can see a little red through the scope, but none of my pics show it up. Any quick hints on how to capture the colour?

Mick
26-06-2010, 09:45 PM
Can't see and red here.

Given the arc across the moon the earths shadow is quite large

h0ughy
26-06-2010, 09:53 PM
2sec iso100 then go to 1 sec and then to 0.8 etc

Jen

That's a good observation Kev. Anyone know the answer to how big it is?

mithrandir

About 28.5 arc seconds

Edit: I should have said 81.4 arc seconds.

floyd_2
26-06-2010, 10:15 PM
I decided to go for pure viewing tonight - no photos. Just lovely views from Sydney. I have the XX14i and also the SV80 set up - and two comfortable viewing chairs. Certainly the SV80 is less effected by the seeing. However, when the moon snaps into perfect focus in the XX14i - WOW! I probably won't be able to see through my left eye tomorrow.

Seeing as the moon is 0.6 of a degree across, how does that work?

h0ughy

well i have packed it in - already filled 2 x 8 gig cards trying every different settings i could

mozzie
26-06-2010, 10:34 PM
wow!!!! after heavy cloud and rain got around 35 to 40 mins near cloud free, right when shadow at its max i cant complain with that.
raced down and opened the pod using my 35 pan and 17 nag at 87x and 179x both with filters.the 35 fits nicely in the fov and it was a clear chrisp sight with nice curviture of the shadow and a slight hint of red (very faint)and the 17 nag i was scrolling along the shadow seeing the mares and craters from a different angle as seen with terminator.
one nice feature was as changing eyepieces the shadow coming out of the diagonal was reflecting on the back of the pod and showing the curved line amazing.
after a terrible day ended up beeing a great evening just goes to show stick with it and the evening may become fantastic.
some great pictures coming through may have to get into this imaging

It's now drawing to and end and my Camera has taken around 700 shots. Can't wait to see it animated into a moving movie.. All things being OK with the exposures. Tomorrow will tell. Stayed clear here in Adelaide and was a great sight to see.. Will let you know how the movie works out and might even add a link to it..

Beats watching the rubbish on TV.. Get out and enjoy

I actually saw a good slice of the action here in Melbourne.:D
There were enough holes in the clouds to get a few good glimpses before it rained again.
Couldn't see any hint of red though.

erick
26-06-2010, 11:09 PM
Could see the reddish tinge at the limb in shadow through my 12x60 binos.

(No, I'm not looking at cloud in Victoria - am in NSW this weekend. Clear sky all evening. Great view.)

Darth Wader
26-06-2010, 11:15 PM
Great view here in Sydney. Viewing at 30x in my 70mm refractor there was a noticeable red tinge on the limb (the wife spotted it first!) with a blue-green colour toward the edge of the Earth's shadow. Got a few snaps, nothing good though.

Howdy all,

Just arrived home from the Rugby.

Had great seats for the rugby and a fabulous view of the eclipse too - killed two birds with one stone tonight. The match ended about the time of maximal eclipse ~9:40pm.

And Australia won too!
