Hi Guys

4 tiny planetary nebs captured but with very little exposure time, and of marginal quality due to weather conditions.

1 NGC6369 Little Ghost Planetary Nebula
2 NGC3918 Blue Planetary Nebula
3 NGC2392 Eskimo Planetary Nebula
4 NGC3918 Box Planetary Nebula

Well, that's quite a colourful array of nebulae there, Fred! What f-ratio did you image these at? I certainly empathise with you about Sydney's weather lately - very frustrating !!

Thanks, Fred.
Nice little bunch of goodies.

Box Nebula NGC 6445?

Thanks David. The pics are taken at 2250mm FL, but croped to hell. the objects are some 40 arcsecs in dia or less. I upsampled up, to 4* in PS.

The weather a few of weeks ago was great, its turned to shiet just lately.

Not bad for quick and dirty shots, Fred:)

How long were the exposures??

Thanks Ron. Yeah well, depends where you look, "box" or "little gem".

Galactic Federation 'Most Wanted' list?
Looks like a bunch of Star Trek "entity" villains Fred!

Nice work Mr V.

They were all 20min subs, but they range from hrs to just one sub each filter, havent logged details on these sorry. They all fall short of optimum, so they sort of get a quick show before being trashed.

Great shots Fred - they really contrast nicely against each other. Seems unkind to be trashing - there must be somewhere in the portfolio for them to find a home!?

With regards to the upsampling, I'm curious - do you just whack them up to 400% in one go, or do iterations? (I seem to recall reading somewhere that purists do it 10% at a time to retain max detail?)

Bassnut

Rob

Yes, from 200% to 400% in one go. The purists increment, but I have found the difference minimal.

Doug

They vary hugely in brightness, and I apply different maping depending on how they look. Thats why I like them, they are all very different.

It's like waving a magic wand isn't it.

yes - its only the size of the wand that counts.....;) some take well to the process, others look worse than when you started:)

having data like Fred produced is great to look at. I love his ability to get these objects this good

Fred! ...a noble challenge...I've always thought small PN's are really the domain of the Hubble, but I suspect intrepid souls like yourself will give them a run for their money :)

David. Thats very interesting, mmmmmm, makes quite a difference, I like it, is Topaz in CS5 or?

Thanks Peter, but the res is just woefull. That Baader FFC is looking mighty attractive !!, been looking for something like that for a while (powermates wouldnt work on my gear).

Thanks Ric, Marc. Ill give them another go when I can get more exposure time........and res.

http://www.topazlabs.com/bundle/ you can trial it - then you end up buying it - like i did

(and some of the sales pitch - no not spam ---> " Now completely compatible with 64-bit Photoshop CS5. Use coupon code "64CS5" for $30 off the bundle until 6/30/2010! " and it works in CS4 (for the 64 bit thingy) and the 32 bit works in cs2 and cs3.

Doesnt work in all cases - but it can help in others ;)

Fantastic colours, love PNs just a shame most are so small.
Definitely not trash & I admire the fact that you push your scopes into realms most fear to tread.
I would much prefer to see a small, fuzzy or grainy image of something rarely, if ever photographed (except by hubble) than see an award winning version of Eta Carina for the gazillionth time.

Some of the other big boys with expensive toys should probably take a leaf from your book & try giving us objects we don't normally see.
No offence intended just doing some of this..:poke:

Thanks for sharing Fred, much appreciated.

hehe, thanks Justin. Thats what I think, although Im partial to a really good Eta, it has to be good nowadays or its hoh hum, so I do PNs cause they are different, and theres always room for HUGE improvement and endless Sids ;-).

Yeh apart from the Helix and Dumbell et al, planetaries are one thing the ideal comprimise FL of 1300mm can't realistically target I guess and something a longer FL would be nice to have for ;)

You da extreme imaging man

Lovely work there Fred. Love the smoothness of the images. Sure there is some noise present but nothing to write home about. This is quite an achievement and I often wonder at how imaging has changed in this country in recent years. People like yourself are reaching further and further all the time. Well done.

Thats why I do it, no use even trying to copy you ;) , keep the starfire, or im sunk :P .

Thanks Paul. Smooth? :rofl:lets call it extreme detail destroying noise reduction :P .
