A JAPANESE spacecraft the size of a basketball carrying material from an asteroid is set to touch down in Woomera in June.

Apparently this is set to happen today

MikeyB
06-06-2010, 10:15 AM
It's actually due next Sunday - 13th June - as previously reported (see paragraph 5 of today's article):

Damaged probe set for Woomera touchdown (http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/damaged-probe-set-for-woomera-touchdown/story-e6frea83-1225875930372)

Looks like there will be a good show next Sunday night for photographers.
Assuming the reentry path will be from the Western edge of WA?
Perth to Canarvon and Kalgoorlie should get a great show if that's the case.
That's if it's a direct East trajectory.

Could even come from Broome way?

I was thinking of starting a thread about this myself as I'm looking for info on it. Other than it coming in at 10pm WST on the 13th I haven't heard anything else yet. Anyone got more info?

Does this look like it's headed from a top reentry over Woomera? Instead of a West to East trajectory?
Adelaide may get a good view? Unsure about Melbourne and Perth, but it looks good for the most Southern Cities.

12.2 km/s re-entry, peak deceleration of about 25 G and heating rates approximately 30 times those experienced by the Apollo spacecraft! It will land via parachute near Woomera.

Making the re-entry is 510 kilograms worth of space probe, i'm not sure the "basketball" size quoted above is accurate. Maybe that's what will be left at the end. :)

In any case, definitely sounds like something to look out for if you're in the area! Doesn't sound very likely we'll get a show from Melb but I'll be keeping my eye on the developments.

kalgoorlie ye say... mmm... SUNDAY SESH!!

Also, if any of you have mates working at olympic dam, tell them to be prepared for a shotover landing in the middle of their camp if the japs get their maths wrong. Could be a funny story.

I haven't found anything to specifically say where the re-entry is coming from (what direction), has anyone?

I think the docments on the website linked give that impression only because of the way they're drawn to show it falling to earth, not that it's coming in on that angle - I don't see how something travelling at M25 could make a turn like indicated in the graphic. Also presumably due to earth's rotation and it travelling roughly in the plane of the solar system it's coming in on an E/W direction.

Looks to me from my reading that 510 kg is the weight of the overall "fridge size" craft, while the bit making the re-entry is much smaller.

wasyoungonce

Lets hope it doesn't land downrange in Emu or Maralinga (http://www.australiangeographic.com.au/journal/woomera-map.htm).

You could tell JAXA "Good luck with that"... hahaha

Kal

The initial launch weight of the Hayabusa craft was 510kg

The Hayabusa capsule that is being returned to earth via parachute is 17kg, 40cm wide by 20cm high

WadeH

Weather forecast is not looking good for Perth. BTW has anyone found any charts etc for the re-entry route. WA is a big state in case no-one has noticed. Doesnt seem any mention of this anywhere, even on the Hayabusa home page?

erick

But I suspect the Border Protection cameras will beat you there! I hope its visa is in order!

Spanrz

Don't forget "did you bring cash with you, worth over $10,000AUD"......?
Or even, JAXA being told by the Customs official that the spacecraft is now deemed ILLEGAL! "you visa is now cancelled, you are now an alien, you will be deported back home"......... LOL!

JAXA would cry!

From Australian Geographic: Asteroid probe to land in Australia (http://www.australiangeographic.com.au/journal/asteroid-probe-to-land-in-australia.htm)

Sounds like Hayabusa has brought back the whole thing - I'd like to see that lot land!

Not what we were hoping to hear, if correct.

sooo according to the text here - it doesnt get down to altitude of 100 klm till over/aligned with Glendambo? and is estimated to be about mag -5 at this point, at maximum brightness, when viewed in NW at about 15d above horizon? so some 100(s?) of klm to the NW of town of Glendambo still? - are they talking about just the small sample container, the fridge sized mother craft - is that long burned up before? how far apart will they be at this point? might be going for a drive , stayed at glendambo for total eclipse back in '02, neat place

fringe_dweller
11-06-2010, 12:55 PM
well i guess its a no brainer to just drive up the highway (in NW direction) 1 or 200 klm and wait, making sure found a spot and hideout before they close highway EASY! WOOOHOOO now for weather edit: ooh and that looks sweet too! long weekend and all! whew

alas wont be any pics from me Blue Skies, :(

wow thanks for great links/graphic there also!

OICURMT, it says it will be in earths shadow during that leg of journey on that site, as you saw... would it warm up enough around 500 klm up? wouldnt think so? ,steep descent tho? wouldnt expect dense enough atmosphere till about at least 150 - 120 klm altitude? would some other effect come into play, a slight enough glow from something else? wont be long i spose to find out

What I would give to be on the NASA DC-8 flight. I see they have closed off the Stuart Highway....what are the odds the Probe will land near the highway let alone hit something.

Interesting bit in the paper: "Among the first people to see it on its return will be local Aboriginal elders, who will fly out in a helicopter to check it has not damaged any sites sacred to the local indigenous people."

Something shook the house last night.
Was either the re-entry capsule... or another aftershock.

Wonder if the capsule landed in a spot where a pod of kangaroos were, and the event has now artificially evolved their state to a tribal stage. (Spore anyone?).

Heh, also great screenshot. Looks like the capsule burst open and the contents are being sprayed and burnt up in the night sky. Whoops.

Hans Tucker
14-06-2010, 09:56 AM
Well the footage of the re-entry being shown on the news indicates it was an impressive comeback for the probe...similar to Skylab. It would be a shame if the capsule contains no sample from the Asteroid, which apprently is a high possibility.

i was the same
wasnt sure what to expect but it was just way too cold to stay out there and my neighbours' stinky fires burning soon sent me back in
video footage looks pretty amazing though!
wish i'd realised earlier i would've gone to pt augusta for a better look!
