Some of the members of iceinspace who come to Cambroon may have traveled or heard of the Obi Obi road or Kenilworth to Mapleton road.
A couple of weeks ago a serious Rockfall happened blocking the road:eyepop:
As far as I know Know one ran in to the debris,:) but it looks like it will be a long time before the road is reopened as the bank is still very unstable:(
The jurney to Nambour and the coast is shortened by about twenty kilometers by using this road.
There is a detour but that entails about another seven kilometers of Dirt road:(

P.S. Some of the furthest away rocks are nearly the size of a small car.

hope they clear it soon - looks like excellent base grade road building material there Ron - just tell the council they will save some money repairing some road base somewhere else - its already dug there ;)

Dave, our road out the front and the ground under my property is made of the same stuff, I wouldn't be surprised to see it finish up being put on our road as it is due for a grading

Why is it closed?? It looks quite passable to me! OK, you need to slow for the track on the left but it's better than a 7km detour.

but it looks like it will be a long time before the road is reopened as the bank is still very unstablehttp://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/../vbiis/images/smilies/sad.gif

On the left of the track where the big rock is a drop of aprox 15meters.
Aparentley the whole area around the rockfall is unstable.

The engineers are assessing the situation to see what can be done, remembering this is not a main road but a country road:thumbsup:

Hi Ron,

There is probably another one of those fossils amongst that lot with
your name on it just waiting to be discovered.

Given how precarious it all looks though, I wouldn't recommend you go fossicking
for it, lest you become swept away in the rubble and become something of
interest for a future archaeologist to chisel out. :)

Best Regards

Gary

As I understand it (I get to chat to the road crews during the morning drive to work), if they start moving it, and the rest of the cliff further along is unstable then that's probably 200 meters of road that could get covered in a very nasty spot, with a lot of rock. And the cliff beside the road used to be around 60 or 70 meters high at least in some parts. Ouch.

There are a number of quarries in the area (one on the opposite side of the ridge from this slide) that supply an aweful lot of road base around here.

Even though it doesn't affect me directly, in some ways I'm thankful for the rock slide. One of those dirt roads Ron mentioned is one I use everyday. The Hunsley (as its called) is about 4.5 km of dirt with some very sticky blind slidey, rutted and corrugated corners. In some spots is is tricky to get two cars past at the same time. And you do it slowly. Now they have 10 meter tippers with dog trailers using it at times. Thankfully not often, but plenty of other large vehicles do.

So the council/main roads (?) have gone into overdrive. Its great now, ... well compared to before LOL. Its certainly much wider, and a lot of bad blind corners have been cleared and upgraded. But the latest I heard via a reliable source (stop/goers love a good chat in the morning LOL ) is that the Obi will be closed for at least 12 months. We could be looking at bitumen in the not too distant future. :prey:

I really feel for those poor people that have to detour to get to their homes. Especially the kids on the school buses (I grew up in this area). Its a long hike of around 12km to get from one side of the slip to the other.

But as they say, "Every cloud..." and "Its an ill wind..." ;) I could really get to like bitumen after traveling on 75 km (minimum) of dirt road each week.

Hi Gary, you may be right:) but I made sure when I was taking the photo to stay a reasonable distance away from the slide:D
I will be an "Old Fossil" soon enough:lol::lol::lol:
Cheers:thumbsup:

Cheers Ron. It's interesting to be able to see what all the drama is about.

Wow what a mess Ron .. that happened to a bit of road round here a couple of years back.. looks exactly the same actually .

They fixed it quite quickly by pulling down all the loose stuff and then building a wall along the face with 20 ton concrete blocks . I guess they cant stop the falls but the double height blocks have caught a number of smaller falls without any dramas.

Was it your way that had the bridge that didn't want to stay where it was put to ?

LOL yeah, Ron's bridge. A marvel of modern engineering.
Can you post a picture of it Ron?

Graham, the information I have gleaned from various sources is that the whole side of the hill is unstable and would have to be pulled down before any remedial work can be done, and that will take LOTS of Dollars:shrug:
I think the bridge you are talking about is the Cambroon bridge, which I am told is in the wind to be rebuilt soon:rolleyes:

As you requested JJ:thumbsup:

No!!!
No new visitors will ever make the trek from Brissie again if the Cambroon bridge is revealed! :P :D

I love it Rob. It's got character and tests your driving skills, having to pick the gap as you drive on and off.

Crikey :scared: I would be looking for a way across the river bed rather than go over that thing. Bad luck with the road Ron but at least no one was hurt in the slide.

Actually I must take some pics of it one day too - might be a good story to tell the grandkids one day! Certainly wakes you up after a long drive JJJ! :D

The Story goes like this:)
The Bridge was originally a 60 TON bridge, built to Take logs from the forestry to the saw mills around the district.
through lack of maintainance it was reduced to 10 Tons, then some Clown with a very Irish name decides to drive across with 20 Tons of logs and the bridge gave a very loud crack heard by many people, and they closed the bridge for some time.:(
You still get Truck drivers with trucks of over 6Ton going across even though there are signs restricting vehicles to 2.6tons:screwy:

That be the one  It does have a certain charecter to it .. and definately the only wooden bridge I've seen with a chicane built into the middle of it .
