That was a good production from "Auntie". A nice balance of documentary and future vision. I think Carl would have approved! Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Interesting program, nothing any keen astronomer wouldnt already know. Why do they always go on about the six month trip and the problems that crew may face? Why dont they just talk to the navy about submaines? I know that they will not be closed up for six mounths but there have been some impresive durations set and what about the ISS or MIR space stations?

Very interesting program, well produced, not too much hyperbole. Overall, very enjoyable.

Mucked up the copying, finally got to watch it online, enjoyed it very much, not too over dramatic.
A great doco for sure.
I'm looking forward to this weeks episode on Jupiter.

It was the single best documentary about the solar system YET!!! Isn't the person who discovered the craters on Jupiter an IIS member? Interesting about Io. I think it was the march SAS meeting when they had an astrophysicist talking about Io and Jupiter's Gravity tides.
Really enjoyed the Jupiter episode.
Which moon would everyone choose to visit? I definitely would like a look at Europa. Sure hope they get a probe under that ice before I kick the bucket, but I won't be holding my breath.
Can't wait to see Saturn next week!:D

I would choose io... Have a look at that super volcano eruption! Wouldn't that be a sight to see! With Jupiter in the back... Nice place to have a barbecue!
Also a nice place to BE barbecued.
But yes, a JAWDROPPING view...:jawdrop:

This is quite a good documentary.
But what I find annoying is the camera keeps showing 1 or 2 people standing with a remote in their hand looking at screens. Then the camera zooms onto their faces, and then moves in a circle around their head.
What exactly is the point of this? Meaningless filler material?

Great show, good to see an IIS member. I was surprised with the bubble blowing simulation, that was fascinating. I always remember the colours swirling but never thought about Jupiter when i was a kid.

I'm really enjoying this - it's not sensationalising the information. which is great because some of that stuff, especially in the saturn episode, has been jawdropping enough when plainly stated.
I really like the music as well. such a good change from the clichéd bleeps and bloops I was expecting.
The episode on Saturn was fantastic, I'm really jealous of the people who will be born in the future and will actually travel there to see the spectacle of the rings and geysers for real.
The Uranus and Neptune episode looks equally enthralling.
Cheers

Hi Mike
I watched it - and I think I saw your footage, however it was very quick.
I missed the credits of the show.:(
Cheers Petra d.
Yes Mike, your Saturn footage was on it, though quick, and your name was on the credits. You can catch this episode on the ABC site online. It went, "Impressive even with a backyard telescope", whilst your video footage (black & white) is showing.
Yep - the ABC's IView website is fantastic Mike - you should be able to find the last 2 episodes on there
Definitely worth hunting down. Must admit I didn't make the connection with the video footage - although did read your post about it some time ago. You're famous....

Actually at the risk of breaking the language rule They say that Uranus is a very controversial name makes you wonder if the person that named it was having a real laugh about the name I am sure they would have found it just as funny as we do now. It would have been really scandalus back then.
"How Did It Get Its Name?
At first Uranus was named "Georgium Sidus", after George III (the King of England at the time). Other people called the planet Herschel, in honor of the man who discovered it. Another astronomer suggested the name Uranus, an ancient Greek god who was the father of Saturn, so that the new planet would have a name from mythology like the rest of the planets. The name Uranus was finally agreed on by everybody in the mid 1800's."

It always interested me if they ever considered calling the Earth 'Gaia' to keep the tradition of the names named in the Solar System.
It was a interesting show last night.
there was a few interesting facts that came out that I didn't know.
I missed what the next episode is about, does anyone know?
Cheers

I hadn't heard that Clyde T. was (partly) on his way to Pluto on board New Horizons! Go for it, Clyde!
I hate it when shows like that come to an end.
A few more episodes would not go astray.
A brilliant series.

I enjoyed the way they ended the show. not just there is pluto and its moons, sending a probe there, and a belt of rocks and thanks for watching. They went into the detail of what is beyond. Which is great for the imagination.

It was a fantastic series and I especially enjoyed the last episode. I'm reading a biography on Clyde Tombaugh at the moment so I was very interested to hear that he's on his way to the planet he discovered (brought a small tear to my eye too Jen:lol:). I can't wait to see the first images of Pluto. A great series and definitely one for the collection.

Nice to have a series like this produced by someone other than Discovery or Nat Geo. Those two tend to hype-up the dialogue and sound effects, and that which should be factual ends up being overblown, dramatically ridiculous and frankly embarrassing.
The narration here was calm, light and comfortable, yet to the point and all without the silly fanfare. Well done - especially to the narrator. I'll certainly be looking out for the series on iTunes or DVD.
