World famous in NZ for the original version of the unofficial national anthem::)

Why would anyone change their name from Arnold Dorsey to Englebert Humperdinck?

I guess because in a crowded marketplace of 60's wannabe pop idols, it made him stand out like a sore thumb. His canny manager Gordon Mills (who'd made his fortune and reputation after renaming and promoting little-known Welsh singer Thomas Woodward, as Tom Jones), realised that people who came to laugh, would stay to listen, once they heard that velvet voice.

Ok,
I just went and listened to Ten Guitars - after hearing the words, I'm not sure why this would be an unofficial NZ anthem???
Please explain? Curious really?

Nice strum-along rhythm for a guitar, easy to sing, easy to play, simple lyrics (and everybody knows them), add beer = a good, old-fashioned Kiwi party.

Ta for that,
Just making sure I wasn't missing a hidden meaning or message. I'm often guilty of that.

I'm not sure what shocks me more - the fact that he's still performing, or the fact that he is still alive...
74 and not out.
Good on him for getting out there, he's enjoying his chosen profession.
He's 74??? Gosh he's holding his age well! He will always woo the women no matter what age he is.:D He is the master of romantic music. I wonder who even comes close? I'd probably say Andre Rieu, though it's a different style of music, but woo and romance, all the same.
Phew! I'm glad someone asked that question... for the life of me I couldn't work that one out myself. I love the song but ;).
I did not know this.... Gosh I don't think the name Arnold Dorsey suits him at all. Even though E.H. is a weird name, for some reason, with him it works, and works well. Completely takes away from the image. I don't know what I am more surprised with - that or Astro Ron saying someone else shares the same name!
Well, I hear that 74 is the new 60. ;)

It seemed to be a fashion around that time to use historical names for bands. Two that come to mind are Jethro Tull and Uriah Heep.

Nearly forgot Tom Jones too! But Humperdink's voice was full of richness, depth and smoothness. I still think he beats them all.
Sorry - I meant today - who would even come close, aside from Andre today? The complete package: music, image, looks. Oh, I just thought of one.. Michael Buble. Can't think of anyone else though.
Classic E.H. pics in his hey day... Have a look Jen, so you know who we're talking about.

Molly, I really enjoyed that video! Thankyou. I'll be playing it over and over again. What a vocal range.
Hey goober, your sleeveface link was really funny. I think I might try that on hubby's face using Travolta's 1970's "Let Her In" album. :rofl:They really did make faces large on album covers then didn't they?!

I know...
I remember I used to go fishing with Englebert.
He was the best.
Put the Englebert Humperdinck CD on and toss the speakers into the water and the fish started jumping out onto the river bank.
(Please release me set me free) :fishing:

I am a Diamond fan, but I do like EH's voice. When he sings "Les Bicyclette de bellsize, i get goosebumps all over. I first heard that song when it came out in early 70s & forgot all about it until I went to a fish & chips shop in Altona to get a meal, and I heard it again. It was better than an orgasm, coz I was so excited the next 4 hours until I could get home and download the song. My mom liked EH, which was why I never listened to him when I was young. Now I like to hear him sing. And I really love Diamond's last 2 albums. Such incredible lyrics and music.
And I take both of them over Pink any day, and yes I am straight.
