To give a new dimension to my old 10-inch Starfinder Dob, I've got hold of a Samson EQ mount which, to my rented muscles, seems pretty solid. I haven't tried it yet as the scope is in the country and I won't use it for some months. But I'm wondering how such a mount compares to the original Meade EQ mount for their 8 and 10 Starfinders. Are they as sturdy, or more so? How does RA tracking compare? (Yes, I know, I'm not going to try 3-hour exposures; it will be mainly observing.) And any thoughts on the difference between drives with AC versus DC?
I know there are a few of the Meade EQ Starfinders around, and there must be a few Samsons as they were sold by Astro-Optical. I've never used one, so ANY information or experience will help.
Cheers,
Tom
