Hi All

Just a note,it appears unfortunate that IIS has a few sleazy types trying

to buy goods for very little and come to your house to collect.

I recently had a Canon 70-200 L F 2.8 for sale,for around $1300

I just checked my emails and found one that said he wanted to pay $350 for the above item,Come up from Sydney to near Kingaroy and collect!

Crikey! some really try it on!,The English wasn't well worded,so very sus indeed.

I honestly fail to see the massive issue.

As the seller, you simply say no.

You're likely to always get people who offer less than you want to accept. And then there may also be people who offer WAY less than what you want to accept.

Say no, ignore their email, mark it as spam.

Is there something I'm missing?

It's completely different than a SELLER trying to offer something that's OBVIOUSLY too cheap / too good to be true. It's already been discussed in the Website Feedback forum in the last few weeks.

I believe it is inappropriate to vilify a low offer as being either dodgy or sleazy. I could name at least one IIS member in good standing who is notable for making lowball offers and when he has made them for gear I was selling, I have simply politely declined and restated my price. I have also done business with this gentleman on an occasion when his offer matched my expectation and found him perfectly fine to deal with.

When you offer something for sale anywhere, I'd suggest you treat all offers as a valuable indication of interest and a possible opportunity to negotiate a price that's satisfactory to both parties. It's an approach that's worked well for me over the years and I've found that hard-core bargain-hunters drop out at the first hurdle, so not too much time is wasted.

As for the comment that, "The English wasn't well worded,so very sus indeed" - I was disappointed to see this on IIS. Not everybody in Australia or on this website has English as their first or even second language, so it's unfair for their difficulty with our language to be cause for suspicion. I'm pretty sure that my problems with expressing myself properly in their language would be far worse!

You shouldn't feel the need to withdraw your item for sale just because you get a few idiotic offers.

I get this on ebay from time to time (right now actually!!) And, Chris that's a lot more hassle than just saying "Bugg#* Off"!! I've had a couple of "buy it now" sales where the idiot buys the item effectively halting the auction then doesn't pay or communicate!!! Very very frustrating - there's about a week of time wasting resolution process to go through before the item can be relisted.

You'll get a buyer for your lens Chris:)

It's rude, and quite frankly UN-Australian to make inappropriate offers to people trying to sell something. So I don't have an issue with the topic of discussion and do see the issue - why, because I should not have to mark it spam or have to deal with stupidity.

I like meat pies, a good slab of cow on the barbie, and the saying which I think is completely appropriate for anyone in someone else's backyard...when in rome, do as romans do.

Anyone who has ever had a garage sale at their place will know that you are swamped with people willing to offer a fraction of your asking price for items, just say no. If it is near the end of the day you may be tempted to say yes then. So if you haven't sold your lens by June/July you may have to consider it or sell it elsewhere.

I agree with Mike, I don't see anything dodgy...TA maybe!

MikeyB's post is the best response I have read yet to this ongoing nonsense. He understands the sale process starts somewhere - the negotiation.
Jen drives it home. You have all done it on something at some stage, the DVD player, 50inch plasma, Fridge, Car, House, and what's your best CASH price? I always have and always will go in low, sometimes get a no, sometimes get an absolute bargain, sometimes save 20-40%, never pay advertised price on new or used. And yes when I sell it I will try and get top $. Am I a sleaze? (actually those who know me don't respond) Never had a seller collapse on the floor calling me names (I'm sure the thought was there). The negotiating part can be very entertaining, I have gone in real low and after to and frowing ended up paying much closer to the advertised price, because..... I wanted it.

It appears that wrongly gone about,letting people know about a small negative

experience I recently encounted,My intention was not to cause a grass fire.

It appears some have been taken offence to a couple of words I used,this was not my intention,But to basically inform the group members to be careful.

It appears that Leon has had a similar experince,It he found it distasteful and did what he felt appropriate,and let the forum know.

So it appears that if people dont think something is quite right,they will let you know,in this case i really have had some brick bats thrown at me.

Let me state that i found the orginal issue as a type of harrsement,and simply removed the item for sale,I also

I find the remark,very distastfull,as it directed right at me!When used the word 'sleaze bag' I never directed it and named that person.

I know there are many others that find the double standards on IIS tiresome.

Yeah might have got a bit out of hand. You can report offensive posts you know. I don't believe there are double standards here. The mods have a big load on their shoulders and won't necessarily know everything that is going on unless you notify them. Take it easy :thumbsup:

I'm locking this thread because it's clearly going down a path where it won't recover.

I still fail to see the issue and don't see the need for it to be discussed here. As the seller you have to expect to receive all types of offers, and it's within your rights to accept or reject them, ignore them, or whatever.

It doesn't matter where you try and sell something - you'll get the same types of "issues". But I hardly thing it deserves a thread suggesting people are sleazy or dodgy.

It's just one of those things that you have to "accept". I can't see why you would take an item OFF sale just because 1 person tried to get it for an obviously absurdly low price.

Anyway each to their own.
