this exposure was substantially affected by very thin high cloud on friday night/saturday morning, but you wouldn't necessarily know it looking at the result:

will have to go back and study up more on getting 'accurate' colour, as my default channel scaling based on a previous G2V star measurement didn't get close. so this is aesthetic rather than scientific colour for the moment..

qhy9 with takahashi epsilon 530mm f3.3, just under five hours total exposure.

sorry doug.. if it's any consolation, i greatly enjoyed running the astro 40D on widefield shots while i was taking this through the scope and am not in a hurry to switch the approach.. qhy9 on the scope and astro 40D with canon lenses. i cursed the laptop, qhy9, scope collimation and lots of other things but the astro 40D just plugged away nicely.. (aside from trying to reframe and focus with the h-alpha filter in place!).

i hope to do some testing of the sensor tilt (or not) on the next clear night and then perhaps a better widefield test with my Mamiya 80mm lens on the QHY9.. if you can wait that long for more results! :shrug:;)

just to help doug out, here also is the same region at a wider scale (200mm) with the Astro Cooled 40D.. 4 hours total exposure in march.. see it's not so bad either ;)

yep.. the astro 40D image is unguided 4min subs at ISO1600 with 200mm lens at f3.5.

qhy9 image is 10 mins subs for luminence, 5 min subs for RGB.

I like both of those shots...and there's plenty of scientific info in both. Your 40D and the QHY9 shots are going to show slightly different responses of the colours in any case.

The FoV of both shots is excellent...great framing:)

I like both images for the fact that they are of different fov.
The QHY is revealing some nice details while the DSLR is showing the expanse of the area.

Fantastic image and well worthy of high praise. Smooth but sharp detail, star sizes are good, guiding superb and colour is excellent. Your best image in my estimation. Also probably one of the best images I have seen from this camera too.

i've spent a bit of time cursing along the way, but the qhy9 is a capable camera (and good value). i'm certainly happy with this result.
