Here is something interesting - I used registax to align and stack my raw frames, but didn't apply any wavelets at all. When the stack was done I saved and loaded it into astra image to see if I could still process it through to a final result.

Wavelets in registax can easily damage an image if you're not careful, and so I was trying to see if there were any alternatives that might be a bit "safer" as far as preserving the image.

So, judge for yourself. The raw mars data was captured on the 1st of December from my backyard under pretty poor conditions and yet astra image is able to mangle the stacked image it into a passable result.

passable? its magic ! when compared to the raw frame.

course the datas got to be there in the first place I suppose for processing to coax out

Yes, the original stacked image was made by stacking about 3000 frames, and then saved as a 48 bit TIFF from registax.

When it's loaded into astra-image I use "convert to greyscale" to get back the original 16 bit per pixel resolution image.

(You could save from registax as a 16 bit FITS image, but then you need to use my fixfits utility to make it readable by astra image).

If I'd saved from registax as a BMP (only 8 bits per pixel) then the result would have been a lot worse. It pays off to keep the data in the highest resolution you can.

Very interesting, Anthony!

Have you tried on a full set, RGB, and compared it to a final result produced using registax?

I'll have to try it on some Mars/Saturn images from last night/this morning.

Hi Anthony, I becoming increasingly impressed by Astra Image's capabilities. I take it you're using the "max" version, don't think I have Van Cittert on version 2?

cheers,

i have been thinking this with my latest mars that i may have overdone the wavelets.

i will back it off a bit and try astra image a bit more

with a simple 10x2 ME deconvolution, same 3.0 max unsharp mask, and 3x3 median.

no need to colour adjust
i will try some other examples

great one bird!!!

with a histo stretch at registax stacking time and a few different medians and means etc

I downloaded Astra Image on my pooter coz Davo said I will need it for processing.

I have no Idea what it's for or how to use it so it just sits there on my pooter doing nothing but looking pretty amongst my desktop icons! :nerd: :P

DP, you might need a gamma adjust or levels adjust (AA calls that "scale") to bring up the details a bit, but it looks very good !
