I'm watching "The Eleventh Hour" atm. The first episode of series 4. (cheers Robin thx)
Matt Smith is terrific as the new Doctor. His resemblance to a young Patrick Swayze is uncanny, and his personality is vibrant.
He had some big shoes to fill, and judging by this episode, he fills them admirably. I'm looking forward to seeing how he settles into the role.
It's quite a good story line. I love the way they introduced the Doctors new companion, Amy Pond. Intertwining it with the past and present.
But I'm starting to give spoilers. Sorry.
I'll be interested to hear others opinions on the new series. Because I love it.:D
Oh!!!! I wanna see it. Will PM you now :)

Hope the new Dr comes out on the ABC soon :)
I thought no-one would ever be able to replace Tom Baker, but David T has definitely set the bar REALLY high....
I'll be looking forward to seeing the new series with great interest! :)

are you saying that patrick stewart is not a good actor?
P.S. Davit.T and Patrick Stewart made a film(?) together. I think its a BBC production hamlet.
Thanks for the heads up Liz, I'll be keeping an eye on the TV guide.
Cheers :)

The BBC site tells me trailers "not available in your area"...NOT FAIR!!
Just have to wait a few more weeks I guess(grumble, grumble).
I see what you mean about the young Patrick Swayze look, bound to get a few girls swooning & as for his new companion Amy...eww err...she's a bit of alright. :D
But will any ever compare to my boyhood love Leela?...I think not.

I believe something will be available on ABC iview (http://www.abc.net.au/iview/) on the 16th April but I don't know what.
Maybe a spoiler...?
Matt Smith's Doctor is a bit like David Tennant's- intense, jumping around, short sharp comments...I would say he is a young david tennant.
I had hoped for some point of difference besides his age.
he did seem to be more "action"-oriented, though, and I am sure they could play up his age a bit, which could give some good story lines.
Perhaps the next episode will highlight some more differences.
Having said that, I did like the episode.
.
.
.
.
[Start possible spoiler]
There will probably be another story arc, like the Bad Wolf story arc for David Tennant and Rose, which will add to the series.

they should just drop the whole dalek domination thing cos theyve been dead how many time?
For those who have not seen the episode yet: Daleks are NOT in the first episode.
For those who have: I think there may be more to the dalek thing than meets the eye.

Can't comment...... finding it very hard NOT to drop spoilers.

Are you guys talking about a new Dr Who??? I am a bit rusty about TV shows etc.
I saw the last Dr Who where the closing shots were completely confusing. He seemed to go whirling around and around, then his face changed... into the new Doctor???
I didn't think Dr Who could die.. he's a time lord....
So whats the go, you smart ones out there - help out an old fuddie duddie. Is there a new series starting soon??
.... I hope you have made a trip into town, and not sitting around on the computor ;) .... in cant wait!!

HEY Liz:D
Thats great news, so he just - 'um - changes??
I cant wait - its a great show. I've been watching it for so many years, and I remember an old series where the Darleks were in black and white!!
I remember the Dr fooled them by throwing his hat onto the darlek's antenna. Then they ran..........:eyepop:

Have just watched the first episode (:thanx: jjj) ..... bit of a shock to start off with ... food flying everywhere :eyepop:.
He certainly has a lot of energy, jumping around everywhere like crazy :help2:.
Then settled into a good episode, great storyline.
I think he will be OK, though may take a few episode to get used to.
Amy seems cool ... not loud and obnoxious like Donna.
 from me.

Did'nt really like new one, think I will give thes series a miss,But as the kids said the previous DR had three seasons, which I gather is quite alot.
I REALLY liked Amy,in the 'kiss-o-gram' outfit.may be might catch another episode!
Sir Patricks' appearance was a giggle.
Over all I am not a sci-fi fan

what a great episode, the freshest dr who episode I think since End of the World with Christopher Eccleston and Rose 4 years ago, love the new opening sequence and the DW initials making up the tardis (Have to look out for the T-shirt) This episode confirms to me that Russell T Davies and David Tennant went at the right time, while they were still brilliant. I'm hoping this series will stick true to the character and the sci fi, without the frequent social agenda issues of the last few years. Long live the new doctor

I reckon Donna was great and should have been the next doctor. In this last regeneration, the doctor wonders about his gender, so clearly it doesn't have to be always male. Anyway, the new bloke seems quite good.
BUT THEY HAVE RUINED THE THEME MUSIC, THE BEST TV MUSIC EVER WRITTEN! :mad2: They seemed to do this after Peter Davison's turn as the doctor as well.
I enjoyed it in spite of this crime.

VERY UPSET! about the new Darleks.they look like a cartoon character, big fat and ugly, they look like 'teletubies',how can the producers do this? to the most famous sci-fi villians? Also why change the colour of the screw driver? it always
been blue!
NO,sorry I will not be watching again, even Amys' outfits will not get me back.
what a shame it all gone pear shaped! (like the darleks):(

Regarding the 'teletubby' darleks, aparently there is outrage in the U.K

Well I loved the first episode, thought the new guy has managed to capture that manic nature of the Dr nicely.
Amy's hot, nothing like Donna thank god...strong willed & independant I can handle, loud & obnoxious gives me the sh....
I'd say little Emelia on the inside won't let him forget the "back in five minutes" thing though...and rightly so.
Just had a look at a piccy of the new Daleks...what the hell were they thinking? :screwy:
Daleks are killing machines, their only thought is universal domination, not trying to match furniture from the 60's.
As a member of the Dalek Builders Guild & owner of a mostly finished markIII "Genesis" type (Derek the Dalek) I consider myself a bit of a Dalek fanboy & I too am feeling a little outrage over these abominations. :mad2:
Drab, grey & battle scarred...that's a Dalek, though the gold NSD's are cool too.
Love the piccy of the girls dressed as NSD's, wouldn't mind getting exterminated by that crew.

HI Justin.
Sounds very interesting, you building a mk III darlak,my son would be very interested to see your project,he wants to build one,I have a good wood work shed,He has been on the net and seen something about such a group you mention,or similar.
Personally,I am a bit tired of woodwork, and making a darlak looks rather to challanging.I agree with you being exterminated by those 'darlak chics' may not be such a bad thing!;)
Such a shame about the new doctor who series, looks like we are in for a few dud seasons.I know this happened after Tom Baker,he an Pertwee I really enjoyed.after those two it was all down hill for sometime for the doctor who fans.
Cheers Chris
Have watched 2 episodes, and enjoyed them both.
I like the new Doc, he has got a lot to live up to, and hes doing well.
In a years time, he will be 'The Doctor', and we will barely think twice about it, well, me anyway.

Gidday Chris, if your son's serious about making a dalek then he should get himself signed up to the DBG, their homepage is Dalekcity dot co.uk.
Lots of helpful tips & the people are like those here, friendly & very helpful.
Haven't had a look at the Guilds plans lately, think they've improved but a very good set of plans can be found at projectdalek dot com, markIII's, NSD's, Special Weapons Daleks, the lot.
If he has a workshop with the right tools and an old man(that's you) to help him out he should have no problem with a dalek.
Cost-wise depends on quality of build & your abilty to scrounge bits, anything from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars is the range & Derek has set me back about $750 with little more to spend.
If that sounds like a lot then to put it in perspective only one company has the rights to build daleks (This Planet Earth, UK) which sell for approx AU$4000 + shipping, that's the cheaper MarkIII model, saw one on ABC's Collectors awhile back auction for AU$6500.
Build quality of those Daleks is nothing special as the original BBC ones, quality could be easily matched by a home builder.
In short if you ever sold it you'd more than make your money back.
So I'll leave you with a couple of pics of Derek so far, must finish him off this dry season, mostly just finishing & painting left to do.
Justin
That's awesome Justin
I love it

HI Justin.
Well done on your fine creation of a darlek,it does look very fine.
I am sure my son has those pages,he did sow me something along those lines.
Yes,would have skills and workshop facilities to build one,I used to restore antique furniture full time,so using old recycled bits and pieces is second nature. Also worked on movie set production, did quite a props in 'Expo88' in Brisbane many moons ago.
thanks for the helpful pointers.
Yes,the gold darleks looked good,so too the black ones,I think there was one called darlek "Khan"-he was black.and was very good.
Yes,I did see that "Collectors" episode on ABC,where in Tasmania a black one was auctioned for $7000.And as you say for around $1000 one can build a example to a very high standard.
On another sci-fi they had a robolt, the one from 'Lost in Space',apparently there is a repro of him.I think I saw a factory production version of it once and the price was very high.
Anyhow, the photos you provided,-I am sure ,have been of great interest to readers of this thread.
cheers Chris

25-04-2010, 12:28 PM
Chris, sounds like you're over qualified for Dalek building, looks like your apprentice will have to do most of the work.
Ah those Lost in Space & Forbidden Planet robots are very cool, but at the price of a small car they make expensive doorstops.
Wow - I think the new Doc and Amy look like they'll be very worthy successors, following in hard on the heels of a very tough act.
I've been away a little while, and on the way back discovered the plane had the last few episodes. So I've caught up the last few David Tennant shows and now have seen first 2 Matt Smith episodes. Looking great.
I'm jealous re the dalek too - looks awesome Justin!

Yes Justin,I do believe the robot from 'Lost in Space' is very expensive,I saw a
current affair type program, and there was one feature on this type of thing.
Somebody in Australia had one,and I think the price was around $15000.
So expensive door stop indeed!
Yes-Got a very keen son, wanting to use workshop, after seeing your pics.
I like how you have got the proportions right with the head of yours,I feel that is the most difficult part,I have seen a few repros, and thet did a good good.
but somehow the head just did not look quite right,
From what I have seen, yours looks like the best one,you certainly got the top of its head perfect. We look forward to seeing it complete, are you doing the gold colour?
cheers Chris
JD2439975
27-04-2010, 01:02 AM
Well spotted Chris, yes the dome is one of the more difficult bits both to make & get right.
Deformed Daleks are known as 'Wokleks' often because the head resembles a wok.
As for colour scheme I'm going for the basic grey 'Genisis of the Daleks' type, as a kid that story was my introducion to the Daleks so I've always had a fondness for them...but in future if I get bored of it thought I might try a 'camo' scheme, never seen one done up in jungle greens.
Best of for your sons build

By the way, is the St John's Ambulance emblem on the Tardis a new addition, didn't notice it in the last series
i would be trembling...
it is all bout marketing and sales. now you have to buy five different darleks not just three...

yes, it has been revived since series 1 (i think series 1).

Ive been a Doctor fan since it first showed in Black and white when I was a kid.
Cant say I'm impressed with the new show yet.
The first installment showed promise, but last night was abysmal.
The whole universe and he's hanging round earth again.
Where are the new ideas?
where is the suspense? Oh hum, the doctor going to save the world again.
And where did they get a pommy factory that could retro-fit spitfires with alien tech in 15 minutes?
At this rate they will be bringing back those angel statues again. Errr, no wait, they wouldn't trivialize one of the best episodes of the earlier series would they?

So far I think episode 1 9/10, ep 2 8/10 and ep 3 with the new daleks and Winnie 6/10, visually strong episode but poor storyline IMO, I suspect it is a linking story for later in the series and will all make sense in time. The new daleks I don't mind, my kids love them. Hope the weeping angels episode doesn't follow a mathematical progression from the rankings above otherwise it will be 3/10:eyepop:
Yes, pretty much agree there .
The ending of that dalek episode was interesting :scared2: and does lead to things to come.
Those weeping angels were really scary, so at least will be 7/10.
Hang in there new Doctor Who!!
JimmyH155

saw the one with Winnie in it, and spitfires in space. All a bit corny I reckon. Wasn't particularly impressed with the Doctor, or his new assistant. Darleks looked too smooth and unrealistic - looked completely false.
I quite agree with some of your comments - lets go somewhere in the Universe - not on Earth, where no doubt they dont have to build so many new film sets:mad2:
Agreed - last episode a bit weak and hard to believe, even for sci fi. Still, every song can't be a hit. I think the new doc and assistant have got plenty of potential.
I'll be the usual pathetic sci fi addict glued to the box (whenever I remember to watch at 7:30 on a sun night...!)

The last 2 episodes with the Weeping Angels have left me in no doubt that the Dr Who train is still on the track and heading to exciting new destinations. The promo for the vampires in Venice episode looks like they've recycled the set and clothes from the Shakespeare episode a couple of years ago, hopefully the story will be good
