It's now only 6 months to go until IISAC2010! Now in our 5th year, IISAC2010 is the IceInSpace Astro Camp (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/iisac) - a star party held at Lostock, in the beautiful Hunter Valley region in NSW.

This year, it's taking place from the 7th-10th October, 2010 - which is the last weekend of the October school holidays (for NSW) on the Thursday/Friday/Saturday nights. Come for 1 or 2 nights, or all 3!

Make sure you put the date in your calendars, plan your annual leave and start dropping hints with your partner and family :)

Keep an eye on the IISAC2010 page for more information and updates over the coming months:
http://www.iceinspace.com.au/iisac

http://www.iceinspace.com.au/iisac/iisac2010/iisac2010-web-600px.jpg (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/iisac)

I hope to see you there!

Hi Mike,

I am intending to come to IISAC again this year (of course).
but am tossing up between the accommodation options.

So, I was wondering, and I know others are too.
Why is it more expensive to camp (in own facilities) then to stay in the bunkhouse.?

Hope you don't mind my asking on public forum?

I am sure there is a really sensible reason, but curious. And it is probably good to put it out there, I thought.

thanks

iceman
06-08-2010, 02:54 PM
Hi Allan
Partly it's related to what I get charged by the scouts, and partly it's to try and make it a bit more economical for families or husband/wives who will share the camping accommodation.

Only 2 months to go now! I hope to see some more bookings coming in soon!

The Mekon
08-08-2010, 08:19 AM
this is the question I was asking. As many of the attendees are likely to be singles (my wife is happy for me to go, but would never come with me!), it is a bit steep asking to pay more to camp. Is the turf that sacred?

So one could pitch a marquee with beds for 200 and only pay $15??

I know the amount is only a pittance - I could afford to pay it a hundred tiomes over, but its the principle that galls.

iceman
09-08-2010, 01:52 PM
I'm sorry you feel that way John.

Running a star party is a huge risk for me. I have to pay a lot of money upfront hoping that sufficient people register so that I can break even.

I know it's not a "bargain rate", but surely it's affordable and reasonable for a camping spot where you can park at your door, set your telescope up at your door, and have hot and cold water, toilets and showers and other facilities at hand.

The fact that the bunkhouses are $5 cheaper should not be part of the equation of whether you come or what accommodation you want. It's whether you want to sleep in a bunkbed in a room with others. Some people will want that (convenience), some people won't (snoring, personal space, not close to telescope, etc).

Hopefully it is great... I'm struggling with the cost vs benefit analysis (only because the cost side of the equation is so heavily weighted!) ... but my wife assures me it'll be worth it.. :) Anyhow, not wanting to overrun this thread with OT.

Does anybody know what mobile phone reception and mobile internet is like around the camp site?

Cheers
Steffen.

iceman
10-08-2010, 04:59 PM
There's no GSM reception.
If you have NextG, you can *sometimes* get reception around the bottom house. If you walk or drive to the top of the nearby hills, you'll get reception fairly regularly.

In the previous years, I've often driven to the top of the hill near the top house, or sometimes driven higher on the road that heads off to the right when crossing the cattle grid.

If you haven't been there before, I (or someone else) can show you where the best spots are.

Steffen

For those who haven't been, I highly recommend it. For newbies, there is plenty of people willing to share and depart their knowledge on all things astro related.

The ammenties are clean and adequate with great places to setup camp.
Its a well run event and the fee charged imo is reasonable.

I wouldn't begrudge Mike and the volunteeers if they were to make a small profit, given the huge time and effort they put into this in making it happen.

Cheers, Norm :D

montewilson
18-08-2010, 09:03 PM
Following on belatedly from an earlier post about the price of the event, please take it from someone who has been involved in the organizing of a number of SPSP's and has been to some of the signature US events like the Winter Star Party in Florida, the IIS Star Party is very well priced and lacks nothing in terms of organization and attention to detail. I would also add that being a smaller event than others on the Star Party calendar it is a fine one to bring the family to and/or come as a "newbie".

Hi People, I think the link to Lostock Caravan Park might be incorrect. When you click, you end up in Wales. Don't suppose registration also includes airfares and equipment transport :)

Thinking about going - be a good chance to see those that know what they are doing in action ( especially as I just purchased my first EQ mount ).

The chance to look through a BIG dob, is also very appealing. Not sure if it is worth bringing my gear ( 10" Newt with HEQ5PRO - yes yes, too heavy I know, but ok for visuals once I workout how to get it properly aligned ).

P.S. Havn't found any info re this caravan park, can someone supply a web address, or phone number ?

No caravan park at the IISAC site which is a bit north of Lostock Dam.

Check Google Earth or Google Maps, screen grab attached.

Doc,

If you can bring your rig there will be plenty of people ready to help you with alignment and anything else you're a bit scratchy on!

The Three Rivers Foundation guys will be there, the large dobs are just sensational, I hardly looked through my own scope last year!

I've attached a picture of the camping and caravan area, no power so be prepared!

Any other questions, just ask.

Hey Chris, nice shot, you managed to capture almost the entire "Central coast" contingent there.

Just to avoid confusion, this is not the Caravan Park Doc. this is just the camping on the next door farmers site (the $15 per night stuff). The caravan park is a few kilometres back up the road near the Lostock Dam.

This may help

this is what the caravan looks like:...

iceman
03-09-2010, 08:29 AM
So far we only have 22 bookings, with 33 people coming to IISAC2010.

It looks like being the last star party in the calendar year isn't a good idea. With only just over a month to go, the numbers are very low. Maybe people have used up their budget or brownie points at other star parties throughout the year.

If it doesn't pick up, I'm not even going to come close to covering costs. It's too late to cancel it for this year but maybe I'll have to go to every 2nd year, or maybe not at all. It's just too much trouble to organise if not many people end up coming.

I'm not bitter or upset about it - the Australian star party calendar is very full now - with lots of star parties throughout the year (both large and small ones) being held by Astronomy clubs and societies.

It looks like people are either already getting their fill with the other star parties, or maybe IISAC just isn't offering what they want in a star party.

I guess we'll see what happens in the next month.

Steffen
03-09-2010, 01:23 PM
I'm sorry to hear that, 33 doesn't sound like a bad number to me. What is your target, how many people attended in previous years?

I hope you get more bookings in the weeks to come, in any case I'll be there with a delegation of 5 :)

I'd like to ask a question, while I'm here. During previous astro camps in Lostock, did people leave their scopes set up for the duration of their stay or did they set up and pack away each night?

Cheers
Steffen.

It will save time during registration when you arrive if you have already filled in (and had a family member sign as witness) your disclaimer form. But no worries if you haven't filled it in, we can certainly do it on the day.

It depends whether you're down on the lower field (and which end of it) or in the astrophotographers area.

Hi Christine

Yes, definitely. On the lower observing field, or in the astrophotography field, you're able to camp and park next to your gear.

The only exception is the area directly around the bottom house (in the fenced area) - there's no camping or parking within that fenced area, primarily for safety reasons.

The astrophotography field is on the sloped area beside the bottom house / amenities block.

We grab power from the amenities block. I run a long cord into the field and then have a power board and a few people usually sponge off that :)

It's best to have a few long cords though so we're not all trying to run off the one power board. I think it tripped 2 years ago because too many people were sucking off it.

I camped on the lower field last year (my first star camp) and for the outdoor space and quieter locale than the main house, I'm happy to pay more.

Having been to numerous types of festivals (music, meditation, etc) I think this one is CHEAP!

I brought my humble 6" Newtonian and had the best time looking at dso's and sections of sky that I can't see so well (or at all) from my backyard. The view of the Northern horizon was great and I spent ages staring in awe at Andromeda and its little companion galaxies for the first time.

The view of the southern sky, especially after about 12-1am was just spectacular.

I found the relaxed atmosphere lovely and the kids seemed to be having fun, with many participating in night viewing on their family 'scopes or enjoying the royal view through the large Dobsonians at the night sky tour. The river was a daytime delight for them and I spotted a magnificent blue kingfisher swooping along looking for food.

I am very excited about attending and thank you so much Mike (and no doubt some unnamed others) for your time and efforts. It's truly appreciated.

I'm going to disagree. A forecast for severe thunderstorms means there's a pretty good chance you won't have clear skies.

Hence, why I asked. But no matter, I'll check myself.

Checking in on day 1 of IISAC.

At the top of this nearby hill (near Mount Disappointment) I can get mobile internet reception but not phone reception!

It's been a mix of sun and cloud today, I'm hoping it will clear up later tonight. Everyone is in good spirits, the place is ready and it's time to try and align my scope and set it up for the first time in MONTHS!

Look forward to seeing more people tommorrow.

The forecast is mixed but who knows what will happen. Good times regardless!

Cant make it this year not only did work conspire against me for Thursday/Friday I recently dislocated my shoulder had enough trouble pitching the tent and and setting up the EQ6 with 2 good shoulders.

Wish I was there too. Started the grain harvest today so I'm on the header fairly solidly for the next few weeks, 5000 acres of wheat to do then 3500 acres of chickpeas.
I'll be thinking of you all while I'm out there! :(

Hey guys, I did notice a few of the regulars missing, including you Chris. Such a shame - hope your shoulder improves soon.

We had a cloudy and slightly damp night last night, and the forecast for the remainder isn't fantastic either. Unfortunately these things happen but we'll have a great time regardless.

More chatting, drinking and socialising! :)

See you this arvo Mike. We missed you last night. Fred and Samerski wouldn't bloody shut up! ;)

Last night was another 'social' night. :) But today is looking the most promising, it's breaking up a bit and the forecast looks 'ok' for potentially some clear skies tonight.
Let's hope so!

Had a great few hours last night chatting with RB, Gary Kopff, Mai, and Mark Suchting. Has been fun, but hoping for clear skies tonight!

I had a fantastic weekend, despite the weather on Friday night. Well done Mike and all the others who pull it all together.

Over the weekend I had various conversations with various people on different topics, and I know some thought I was having a lend of them at the time, so here are some links to some of the things that I mentioned or said I'd on forward.

Physics for Future Presidents - this is a uni course, which you can listen to podcasts of the various sessions - I can't remember which semester / year I listened to as it was a few years ago, but for those who I was discussing it with (Fred V and others), it is well worth a listen.
http://muller.lbl.gov/teaching/physics10/pffp.html

DSLR damaged by a laser - links to some videos of cameras being damaged by lasers - it made news back in July this year and you should be able to track down other references if you still dont believe me.
http://blog.iso50.com/photography/5dmarkii-damaged/

10 pack RED LED lights - US$4.42 delivered - for those who asked where I got the "throw away" RED LED lights that I lent out to a few people last night. They are great value (sub 50 cents each delivered!)
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12160

Canon Lens Coffee Mug - for the camera geeks who liked my Canon lens coffee cup - this is also from Deal Extreme. They also have a thermos version.
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.41966
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.45404

Hopefully that's all of the things I promised to send links to. Sorry for doing it to the whole group, but easier then trying to remember precisely who asked what, etc.

I'll post some photos over the next week or so.

Things I liked most were, the views through Rod's 20" Dob Mary Rose in good seeing (having recently worked on NGC 1365 as an image it was great to be able to make out so much of it visiually), Guy Fleming's single 10min sub on the LMC (the total product of three nights), RB's Guiness, Dave Houghs peformance of a travelling car boot equipment demonstration and..... I had a great time at IISAC2010.

After a very wobbly last 3-4 months in my personal life, my motivation for astronomy and organising IISAC has been very low - but now I'm glad I persisted. It was a lot of fun.

It's a shame Thursday and Friday were clouded out, but after the high expectations that Saturday would also be clouded out, it was a very very pleasant surprise when it cleared around 8:30/9pm and we got 6 hours of clear skies. A great way to end the star party.
The views through Rod's 20" SDM were fantastic.

I guess the one benefit of cloudy skies is that there was much more socialising and chatting, and it was great to catch up with so many old and new friends.

A few thanks:

- Thanks to our Guest Speakers - Phil Hart, Al Sheehan, Chris Lidman and Prof Fred Watson. All were entertaining and educational. It was fantastic to see Fred get the guitar out later and serenade us during dinner :)

- Thanks to the sponsors - Andrews Communications, Wildcard Innovations and Australian Sky&Telescope. I appreciate your support.

- Thanks to the fantastic people who helped out during setup and cleanup, especially Al Sheehan, David and Kerry, Ric, Logan, Monte and anyone else I've forgotten (sorry!). It was really appreciated and made my job a lot easier.

- Thanks to Fred V (bassnut) for generously bringing along and setting up his PA system. It makes a real difference to be able to communicate to those on the bottom field as well as around and bottom house. You're a legend!

- Thanks to RB for doing the photography on Saturday!

- Thanks to Al Meehan for the screen printing.

- Thanks to the Gresford RFB for their excellent catering as usual. 3 course meals for $15! What great value, and great tasting too!

I hope I haven't forgotten anyone!

I'll be posting a link to the feedback form sometime today, so please take the time to provide feedback, as it will help me with the next IISAC event.

I'll post some pics in the next day or two.

Cheers

Well, on Saturday night Space Dog and myself gave the Argo a work out on the 16" Lightbridge:). We started on the popular tour, then the Messier tour and finished off in identify mode exploring the LMC and SMC looking at all sorts of obscure stuff:thumbsup: (Krons, Lindsays, etc).

We ran the Argo's batteries flat and started again:P... and eventually called it quits when hypothermia was getting a good grip on us... you see we weren't expecting it to fine up like it did, and were in socialise mode when people started turning lights off... recognised universally as a sign that the sky is clearing;). Not knowing how long it would be clear for, we jumped straight into observing rather then donning thermals, etc...:P

I don't know what time we called it quits, but I'd guess it was mid-nightish, so we got a good 3-4 hours observing in... and not too tired for the drive home;).

What a wonderful memory that was!!!

The lesson I learned that evening after wasting four hours on trying to take photo's of the Tarantula Nebula was that when using your new fang dangled motorised focusers (on both the main tube and guide scope), make sure you undo the little screw that's locking the draw tube!!!!

The irony is that had I chosen to perform my focussing manually, I probably would have had some nice images of the Tarantula nebula.

Well, jamespierce and I are finally home! We went north to Lostock via Thredbo (Crackenback actually) where we had one really good night's viewing. IISAC was awesome, of course, although I think James is going to be get sick of my optimistic "I've seen it get good from worse!" From there we headed west, and stayed a couple of nights in the Warrumbungles, had two good nights' viewing (albeit cut short by cloud), and went to Siding Springs - the exhibition there is indeed, erm, tired. The AAT makes even Rod's 20" look small though.... And today, we've come home from Parkes, where we went to ogle The Dish - and stopped off to spend a few hours talking to Peter Read from SDM and drop off James' scope for a little 'holiday'. Truly an awesome, and very nerdy, holiday - thanks Mike for giving us the excuse to do it!
