Jupiter in green light

Here's another processed image from Wednesday morning, this time (for something different) I only processed the green frames. I was looking to bring out some more contrast around the GRS and all the turbulent cloud nearby.

This is 400 frames out of 800, processed in Registax and Astra Image. Image has been enhanced to bring out details.

The slightly "hard" edge on the rhs of the image is most likely caused by rotation / alignment gremlins. Over the length of this sequence (90 seconds) Jupiter rotated about 1 degree. In the centre of the image this comes to an offset of about 3 pixels. The alignment software has kept the image centres aligned, so this 3 pixel displacement shows up on the planet limb instead, pushing the latter frames off to the right.

Lot of detail present there Anthony. Do you recommend only shooting for 90 seconds? I can see good detail in the GRS as well.

Did you do LR deconvultion to this shot?

Just want to learn as quickly as possible.

Hi Paul, 90 seconds is enough for the image to rotate about 3 pixels in the centre, thats enough for me.

The processing sequence in full for this image was:

- registax, load 800 frames, set mitchell 2x resample,
create reference frame, optimize, stack 400 best frames.
- wavelet settings 20,20,20,10,10,10
- gamma 0.8, brightness -10

save

Load into Astra Image, and then:

- crop, gamma scale (again), smooth with contra-Harmonic mean filter,
resample down to final size, LR deconvolution 20 turns radius 1.3,
unsharp mask Medium x 1.7

ving, the alignment process makes sure the centre is ok, and the pixel shift is displaced to the edge instead. You can see it on the right hand edge.

Did what you said Anthony to that previous shot and got this. It does not show as much detail but looks more natural I think.

Paul, I didn't mean that this processing sequence was better than another one.. actually I change what steps I do, and what values i use depending on how I see the results and the original frames.

I was only giving it as an example because someone asked if I used deconvolution as part of the processing. It's not unusual for me to try several different settings for each of these steps until I find the one that does the "best" job - subjectively!

Thanks Anthony, I actually found that this method worked a lot better for that particular AVI. And yes I can see that different things will work for different images. This gave me another technique though and I really appreciate you taking the time to help us lesser mortals.

Tried, and failed. saturn is too low in the north for me to get good images from my backyard...

Well, might be trying for another saturn in a couple of weeks from high in the snowy mountains, so maybe I can get some good seeing...
