Hi everyone :)
We are expecting our first child, and my wife has requested I relocate my 2 telescopes (200mm and 130mm) out to the shed.
Is there any issues with this?
Things i'm particularly interested in is the temperature... could it possibly get too hot?
Ill keep them covered with sheets etc. while they are in the shed.
The shed is a Stratco shed... typical design... concrete flooring with colourbond walls and a colourbond roof with 1 laserlite sheet for light.
Any thoughts?
Why do the scopes have to go to the shed??
The kid can live there :P
Just joking :P
My scope makes it to 50C sometimes and it doesn't do anything to it.
Covered, the scope is save in the shed:)

Greg,
unfortunately you are a victim to a con job.
First it starts with your stuff, your most loved gear, and put to
you in a way that is sure to make you cave in :)
But before you know it, your shed is then storage for the Xmas tree,
3 boxes of decorations, the boxes all the Xmas presents came in (just
in case 'we need to return them under warranty') Do warranties last
16 years? :)
Next it is that old wardrobe your parents gave you when you were
single ' I never liked that, sorry hon', she says...as subtle as a housebrick
through a plate glass window
Then it's the gym equipment you bought her because you thought
she would use it.
Then the pictures and posters that you had when she first met you.
I have two sheds...and I can hardly walk through them.
Seriously though, a metal roof uninsulated shed is probably a bad
place for a valuable scope. My shed is bad for dew, all metal in
the shed has surface rust of some kind. Having said that, my non
permanent scopes reside there.
Sorry, must go...wife is calling me...:)

Steve, Martin...
You both crack me up :D
haha!
At the moment I 'store' the 2 mounted scopes in our front lounge which is going to be the baby's play area.
So, one vote yes, one vote no. ;)
Psst Greg, don't listen to Steve ( see what is written under his message :P ).
Steve everything is good from Pink Floyd

Hell no!
They are hiding safe in my office... and in digital format on my home server!
Hi Greg,
Not a problem at all. I keep my SDM in a shed fulltime - never had a problem. It gets hot in there during warmer days and it never affected the optics or the timber on the scope. FWIW, the shed is a colorbond, with one laserlite sheeting for light, one window (tinted), concrete slab.
(ala Garageworld).
I do cover it with one of those silver condom thingos - if anything to keep the dust off it and to protect the kydex material on the upper tube assembly. (Kydex is known to warp in sunlight).
I recently installed a whirlybird to help draw some heat out, but to be honest, doesn't make all that much difference.
I also keep my eyepieces and accessories (in a case) - no issues.
So to summarise, there is no issue.
PS: my shed is not insulated.
Cheers, Norm

Ummm, ever thought of making the shed's roof roll off???
Pink Floyd is my favourite band. Echo's is their masterpiece. Animals, their best cover.

Wish I could!
Pitty my shed is placed in a very awkward position. Wedged in between a chicken coop, and a Gazebo which houses a spa!

And no there is no insulation going into that shed. But it will be lined. I was sweating in there this afternoon. It does get hot

Nettie, it is one of my favourites also!
I'm a big fan of The Division Bell at the moment... 'What Do You Want From Me' is quite fitting as i play it on repeat at work :)

I am thinking of using my shed as a base for my astrophotography.
I've got a desk in there already, which is a perfectly good dining table my wife wanted to throw away!
I've run power to the shed, even run a data cable for network connectivity back to the house.
Still quite new to it all... I've only taken a few shots so far... which was a long while ago... but am diving back in head first now i have some new imaging equipment - Canon EOS 550d - upgrading from a Sony A200.

Is your wife worried about the scopes getting broken or that they are an eyesore? well if its the second one........ fight it man fight it. get her to move her hobby to the shed.

good move. Where there's a will there's a way, to get that roof off. ;)

Hi Ben
Definitely the first option. I suppose I'm a little worried also. They will be in the way and don't want them to get damaged.
To be honest, they have been dancing around the house to different locations when I get a chance to take them outside about once a week.
Surprised they have lasted this long in the house :eyepop: HAHA!

A question Greg. Is your shed in one of the darker locations of the yard (as they often are)? If it is then you are at an advantage there. Less distance to move your equipment for setup and less setup time.

I could always roll the roof off over the chicken coop... it would be a big project though!
Maybe in a few years when I get sick of having to take my mount and scope out each time I want to use it.
Then again, I've got enough materials around the house to build another shed... the only limiting factor is back yard space!
The shed is beside a main road. This main road has multiple Suns on it (aka bloody huge street lamps). These light up my back yard like day time. I usually position my scope in the shade of my gazebo. Not many people look for shade at night time do they!
Then again... anyone in the Adelaide area with a silenced rifle... feel free to pop passed my house to take out a few lights! I swear the road is brighter at night than in a tunnel!

Ouch. I feel our pain. My last place of astronomical residence was beside double tennis courts (night competition courts) and a bowls club that did night bowls.
I love the dark. Wild tractors couldn't drag me back to the light.

Surrender, already.
But you might as well plan ahead. Put a bed in there as well.
And a fridge...
