Hi all. I was checking out the southern cross and its surroundings when I came across this faint orange/whitish glow that took up about 50% of my bino's 70mm fov. There are four stars under the cross that make a flat top triangle shape. Just left of those is where I saw this

I'm afraid your description didn't turn out too well, it seems to have stripped out your leading spaces and pushed all the "stars" to the left. Try again? You must have edited it....now they are gone completely.

It did the same thing again so I just edited the first message

Maybe try drawing something in paint and attaching it to the post?

Hi Matt .... yes, depending exacly what area, as many clusters are around Centaurus and Carina region. Omega Centauri is gorg in binoc, and is a huge globular cluster.
Have you got starcharts/Stellarium ... then you may be able to pinpoint the area, and see what is there :)

I'll take a stab and say the Jewel Box (NGC4755). This cluster is "just under" the Southern Cross when orientated in the late evenings this time of year. As for the glow, nope can't help you.

As Liz said, download www.stellarium.org (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/www.stellarium.org) if you don't have it - a beaut program.

I had a look at a star chart and I think its Omega Centauri but my bino's dont resolve it so it just appears as a haze. Its not the jewel box its further down and to the left of the jewel box

The description sounds similar to the the view of Omega Centauri in my 12 x 50 bins so would assume that.

Yes, Omega is an amazing object. Those who stumble across it can certainly get a shock. It does make you feel sorry for those northern hemisphere observers, nah, maybe not!!!
