Here's one of my favourite subjects. I did 5 panels on it last night with the C11/Hyperstar combo. Very good seeing but extremely humid from midnight onwards. I hate when everything is dripping but on the upside there was no wind at all. :)

5min per panel with a Ha 7nm on QHY8. Guided with QHY5 and 8x50mm finder on G11. There is a larger version here (http://www.multiweb.com.au/astro/HS3_ngc3372_ha_lf.jpg)[75% - 3MB] and a bigger mosaic here (http://www.multiweb.com.au/astro/HS3_ngc3372_ha_mlf.jpg) also [50% - 3.3MB] as my computer can't handle massive files.

I've also added a 1:1 crop here (http://www.multiweb.com.au/astro/pub/ngc3372_pano_l.jpg) [3.5MB]. This is the native resolution: 2.87 asp, field size on this crop is w1.7 x h2.6 degrees. I had to crop because my PC has only 2GB of RAM and PS won't save the original file. Time to get a 64bit system.

Aligned in Registar, stacked in CCDStack and processed in PS CS3.
Thanks for looking.

Wow Mark, the mosaic is something quite special.

Well done indeed, I also can't wait for the colour to be added.

Marc,

That mosaic is stunning!

Hopefully you can get the chance to grab the requisite other panels and comlpete the mosaic.

I would dearly love to see NGC 3352 as part of this composition, too.

Well done, mate.

Wow plenty of detail in this, the hyperstar works great. I would have thought the short 22" focal length with a QHY8 would have covered most of this area without needing a mosaic, Eta must be bigger than I thought.
Clear skies Ken.

Top stuff Marc.

The mosaic is fantastic.

The mosaic is great.
The smaller image has more outer detail but lacks contrast in the inner part of the image. Perhaps you can achieve a better compromise on those 2 aspects. Shadows/highlights will give better contrast in the homonoculous (spelling?) without losing detail and brightness in the outer bands.

Greg.

Err?..Greg, I think he was actually a Greek astronomer

Fantastic mozaic Marc

NOW you are starting to extract the FASTAR edge ;)

Thanks Paul - glad you liked it.

Thanks Trev - Maybe narrowband if I'm courageous ;)

Thanks Martin. Yeah something screwed up on the thumbnail. Will have to repost that bit. Looks muted

Thanks David.

Thanks Darren - color?.... :confuse3: that could take a while ;)

Thanks H! Yeah only four panels to go. :)

Thanks Paul.

Thanks David. Glad you liked the mosaic.

Thanks Ken. On the C11 the field is actually not much bigger than my 5" newt at F/5. I think you get much wider fields on C6/C8s.

No woories! :)

Thanks Ric.

Thanks Greg. Yes the thumbnail is muted and the dynamic range has gone out of the window... :confuse3:The cropping definitely did something. Will repost the smaller version. The mosaic looks sharper.

Thanks Mike. Yeah I'm getting there now. Consistent focus is my next big challenge then I can go back to drinking wine. ;)

Excellent detail, guiding and focus there Marc.

I cant put my finger on it exactly, but there is a kind of "compressed" feel to the image, sort of flatish and lacking 3D.

:confuse3: Yeah, the thumbnail substitution didn't work. Still the old one. How this now?

I had a tweak, the background was a bit high (on the hi res version). Small level tweak, but seemed to make a big diff. I know ppl sometimes like to have the background high, but in a busy pic, it can wash out detail and flatten the overall effect. There is no detail in the histogram from black to data start, so a high background level only adds a cast that doesnt(IMO) work in this case.

Yeah I know what you're saying. I know what's happening now. If you check here (http://www.multiweb.com.au/astro/pub/ngc3372_pano_l.jpg) and look at the overall picture you'll see the sky gets very dark as you get away from the nebulosity but the overall intensity around the center is still pretty high because of all the whispy stuff but for the dark nebulae. So by cropping in the light areas everything looks bright as a result. I guess the histogram should be tweaked differently for close ups.

OK, thats fine. I must say, its a very zoomable image, lots to see there.

Thanks Fred. As I said the seeing was good and it helped a lot. I have some field rotation in some of the panels that I'll fix on a repro. :)
