Hi everyone,
I got my first telescope a while ago, a Celestron Astromaster 130EQ. I've used it to view the moon and it looks awesome. I'd love to learn how to see more with it, like planets.
But where do I start? I've read up a bit about using it but I'm still not 100% where to start from. Do any of you guys happen to meet up and I could join in and learn more? I'm in Melbourne, Vic. Otherwise, what should I practice/learn doing first?
Thanks!
Hey Luke ... am sure a few more replies will come in as people get home from work There are quite a few Astronomy Clubs in Melbourne
Sounds like you are doing the right things, in reading up on Astronomy. Have you some star charts?
Stellarium is a great free software program too. Once you put Melbourne in, it will show you where Mars and Saturn are in the night sky, and much more.
There is a lot to learn, and you find your way among the main constellations and their beautiful stars.

Thanks Liz, I downloaded and installed that software and its great! I got one with the telescope but it was a pretty crap interface and hard to use, this one is much better!
I'm going to give it a go as soon as we have a clear (and not too cold) night. Thanks heaps for the help.

Luke
The largest club in VIC is the Astronomical Society of Victoria(ASV). They have a website at www.asv.org.au (http://www.asv.org.au) .
There are 2 events on this weekend that are worth attending. The ASV has its Messier Star Party on Saturday night at their Dark site near Heathcote. There is info on their website about that one. Then there is the Snake Valley Camp near Ballarat which is four 4 nights over the weekend. See link on forum on this site here http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=53277
Looks like Snake Valley will be a ripper this time and may be a little easier to get to.
These sort of events are the best way to learn.
