I'm sure someone will be able to identify the type of lizard.. :)

Louie and I spotted this on the road to Lostock on Saturday, he was sunning himself and wasn't too scared by a car driving right past him.

its a water dragon, Physignathus lesueurii lesueurii. used to catch these as a kid :)

Ditto to ving. I know it as the Eastern Water Dragon. Really big ones (that don't get hit by cars or killed by foxes, cats or dogs) can grow up to 1.5 meters (includes about 1 meter or very whiplike tail).

We get lots of those around here. Here's a shot of one and also one of a
monitor lizard which I estimate to be around the 2m mark. It shot up a tree
next to me when I was crossing the creek up the back, scared the living
bejeeezas out of me.

They're not easy to photoghraph with a Canon powershot A85 as you need
to get close to get a good picture. One day I'll have a nice DSLR with zoom.

Paul,

The one in the pic I just posted was about that, 1.5m. He was actually part
of a group of 20-30 suning themselves on the bank. This one, was the only
one that hung around as I came up, I managed that shot and he was gone too.

I had a photo of my brother and i holding one of those... it was so big that we both needed to hold it. it's claws were about 4cm long. in retrospect i am glad it didnt attack us, it would have done a heap of damage!
