As its too misty to observe, there's sod-all on telly and I can't access porn, errr..... I mean HALO, on this PC, I thought up something that might be, kinda, maybe useful.
A Library.

Lots of us seem to have the same interests and want to read the same type of books. To avoid spending needless amounts of money, that could otherwise go toward gear, I thought "why not start our own Library as the one in town is crap?"

Details to be worked out but it would run roughly as follows.
With there Graces' permission, we start a sticky where members list the books they are prepared to lend and / or want to read. Other members with the books to hand would send them off to the applicant.
Borrower would pay post both ways or send to the next person on the borrowing list at their expense.
Original lender would have 'yes' or 'no' over how long the book remaind in circulation, but about 4-6 weeks max for each lend seems reasonable(2 weeks for bestsellers, 1 week for magazines).

Borrower would also warrant and undertake to not, spit, spew, spill, sneeze drool, dribble, vomit, in/on, break the spines of, write shopping lists in, corner mark, wipe their bottoms or swat insects with, or in any other manner deface the lender's precious book.
Unless you want the complete 13 volume "Cambridge History of the Middle Ages" or an OED Comprehensive Dictionary. I'm pretty sure the postage would come in at less than buying a book you're only going to read once or twice (I read mine about 5 times, but thats cuz I'm pretty stupid).

Any thoughts?
Ta.

Don't want to sound like a wet blanket Peter but good luck :)
Seriously, if you had a good reliable network of local people in your area then it may work but even if I had every trust in someone not local, I wouldn't be sending any of my books in the post, unfortunately been stung before lending things out only to have them come back ruined :(

Sorry but it won't work. it's the same thing with CD's, DVD's, tools - ask anyone who has a decent workshop - they won't lend their tools and with good reason.

"friends" (no more) swiped so many of mine and never returned them that I soon leant don't let on that you have them.

Even better - get rid of most of them, and you'll have more time to do other things like making scopes or observing.

I would work if people were passing on books that they no longer want to keep we all have books that we are willing to part with I don't think anyone means books you can't part with.:D

:DBoy you guys are cynical! Though the point is well made, Supernova's got the idea.
You don't put out anything for lending that you can't bear to lose or see ruined. I'd try to have a little faith here however, and believe that anyone who signed on to the program would have the same vested interest in seeing THEIR books back in one piece, and would treat other's accordingly.
