A great body of work from the man who was Edwin Hubble's assistant.

He takes it further in his recent book "Seeing Red" also a great read. The Arp / Narlikar intrinsic redshift and ejection model is a fascinating read based thoroughly on the mans observations of these active (mainly sefert) galaxies in this book.

What struck me while reading this book besides the Arp saga was how prominent Fred Zwicky was in many compilations of galaxies as well as observational and theoretical research as judged by references in published papers. But since he wasn't a "nice" character not until recently has he been recognised by the media but always with some aside about his nature.
Arp had non mainstream ideas that havn't been upheld by further inquiry whereas essentially all of Zwicky's non-mainstream ideas have help up and been fruitfull.

Arp's ideas are still being investigated by many (http://aspbooks.org/a/volumes/table_of_contents/?book_id=463). Mainstream remains without a coherent explanation for these quasar properties. Zwicky's hypothetical "dark matter" ideas are widely accepted. This inferred dark matter and energy is now claimed to make up 96% of our universe, of which by it's inferred nature can never be directly observed.

Thanks for the review Paddy, it is very informative and has whet my appetite. It is next on my list of purchases, as someone with a larger scope, and who gets out to dark skies quite often!

+1. Thanks for that. I have only a very slight knowledge of Arp, but I believe that he is regarded as one of Astronomy's best observationists(?).
