Well as I do  I reworked the luminance in Astroart4. I wanted to highlight the intricate spiderweb nebulosity in the main area of the nebulosity and reveal more fine structure in the fainter outer dust. By applying selective and varied strength use of deconvolution and high and low pass filters, then importing it into PS and tweeking it further, the result is about as much resolution as I can squeek out of this little 6" scope I think..? :P
This is the close up of the main nebula (1.6meg):

Here are the rest of the field shots (all tweeked :P )

Always fiddling

Yeh I am in awe of this region really, I know it's a well imaged area but there is so much to see and find in there.
A far cry from what we thought was good 25years ago :eyepop::

Mike,
Wonderfully imaged and presented.
I especially like the comparison of the Trapezium. Neat.

Hey Mike - you are the king of repros for sure  !!! ....either that or you have a very severe case of astrophotographer-with-no-observatory-during-poor-weather fever. :D Don't worry, I've got it bad too ... but I promise not to repro my M42 :P
Certainly some great detail going on there mate!!
Cheers, Marcus

I reckon the man has a 16" astrograph hidden away in his garage somewhere, takes these high res images then posts them saying they are from a 6" APO.. :) :P It seems almost surreal to have such a clear view of something 1400 ly away from what is essentially, a very small instrument.. Its crazy what these scopes and cameras are capable of in the right hands thats for sure.

G'Day Mike, I'll go against all the other comments. I kinda liked your other images better. To me this image has an air of falseness about it. Dare I say overworked. I have come to expect nebulous areas to have a softness about them due to their composition. Yes I expect detail but not really sharp hard detail.
The detail is magnificent and as a scientific photo could certainly be used to highlight structure but from an aesthetic view point I like your others better. I know you intended to highlight the detailed structure and have done that better than almost all the images I have seen of this area.
Sorry.

Cheers Frank I always like to compare to Hubble just to remind myself of just how low res my images really are
Nah I'm with Fred Hoyle, the Universe is pretty static and small, read about it in a southern Baptist sunday school text
Yeh. :screwy:.... of course when there is no new data I do like to tinker, I look... and look and eventually decide to go back and redo...and redo..and...until I am 100% satisfied :P you guys just have to put up with the posted tweeks
Having said that..what is the problem with doing repros anyway  they are almost always better or in some cases MUCH better and I just like sharing stuff with other like minded people as I do it. I have never been one to sit on an image until I think it is the perfect result with the available data before posting, I get too excited and want to share staraight away . I'd go mad if I was an image sitter. I always used to tussle with Jase about this, he too was a sitter who waited until he was 100% happy before posting even if it took weeks.
Man I wish I had a 16" F3.8 astrograph, now that would be fantastic!...or better still a 12" F5 four element Petzval Flourite APO would do  ..what do you recon one of these would cost to have custom built
No fair enough Doug, I completely understand where you are coming from...now they will deliver your medication in juuust a few minutes so finish your tea and milk arroroots it'll be aaaallllright
Seriously, fair cop, I see what you are saying but I guess when detail is extracted that isn't usually showcased it probably lends to the fake look you are refering too..?
I didn't use anyones image to refer to with this data set, sure I have seen others work on the region and this undoubtedly had influnces but I can asure you this image was composed in the brain of Mr Sidonio...sooo that probably explains it's problems :P
Yeh, basket weaving - ward 2b

I dunno about a 12" F5 Petzval APO Mike, but I know you could get a TMB LZOS 12" F/9 lens cell for $226,000 USD.. With a 4" 0.75x reducer thats available for $980, make up your own tube, use a 4" AP focuser on the butt end of it... All up I reckon $229k USD for the finished product.. add another 30k for a mount to carry it... 12" F/6.75 ~2060mm FL with a 4" flat field.. Dunno about you but that causes a puddle in my pants..

Yes quite affordable Alex but a custom Flourite 12" native F5 Petzval design with 4" focuser ala the FSQ would be better, wonder who you'd get to make it?...buuut one to keep up your sleeve for Lotto

Ahh Mike , your a worry, whats with the halos around the blue/bright stars?.
strongmanmike
14-02-2010, 07:14 PM
Hmm yes, you have said that before..at least your comments are consistent, cheers
The small halos are from the chip coverslip, I prefer them as is compared to how the stars look when I try to get rid of them

LZOS would make you one... they will make just about anything.. and to that end, APM would make up the tube for you... APM actually advertise the 12" F/9 APO OTA on their site, price is listed as "Estimated upon order" given that no two people are going to want them the same, they are fairly specialized scopes.... The LZOS ones are not Fluorite as such, but as you should know, the measure of a good lens is not in the glass, but in the precision figuring and propper mating of the lenses... The TEC 200 is an FPL51 doublet, yet colour correction beats 90% of FPL53 triplets on the market thanks to Yuri's superb lens design...
Just perusing the APM site, because you got me thinking of dream machines... :) The 10" F/9 is actually quite affordable at $34,900 USD. Your choice of straight through or folded setup (Folded would be the way to go for portability reasons...) Weight wise, a PME should carry it no worries... especially a folded version, would only be 20" long..
Oh to dream...

RIGHT! SOLD I'll have two! a 12" F9 folded APO for visual and a 12" F5 astrograph 4 element Petzval.

Sounds like you are ready to update the scope as well as the ccd!
Things are looking up 12" 4 element petvzal wow maybe a new mount to go with it

I have to laugh Baz, that old cold camera M42 was very dear to my heart now it looks very lame, wonder what a good amateur shot of M42 will look like in another 25 yrs?? :eyepop:
Cheers Tommy
If I ever get a 12" F3.8 I'll have to do it all over again :P
Errrr? I imagine this will be the last process of this data . Man if I could afford a 12" 4 element Petzval I would certainly want a good mount, maybe completely custom made ... and a dome on 100 acres in the mountains and.....now I'm really dreaming
