Star Trails

Hi All,
Its been a long time between posts but better late than never. Still toying around with some star trail shots from my backyard. This one is from November last year.
Taken with a canon 500d, ef-s 18-55mm @ 18mm, 20 4 min subs, iso 400.
Images stacked with startrails.
The trees in the foreground are a bit on the bright side, unfortunate side effect of the neighbors coming home with the high beam on.
There was also a bit of noise in the raw images but subtracted some dark frames and adjusted levels and curves in cs3. Hope you enjoy

Nice image Scott. Thanks for sharing. Did you have a gap between sub exposures? Also do you know what f ratio you used?

Hi Pete, I used f4 with from memory and a 5 sec delay between frames working off a timed remote. I was going to try for a shorter delay, that should help with the slight gaps.

Nice shot.
Interesting how it shows the defect in the lens with field curvature. The stars should create a circle at the pole rather than an ovoid for the lens to be perfectly corrected.

I agree with Adam, the framing and colour of the foreground trees actually adds to the composition and gives it more impact.

Thanks all for the comments, much appreciated.
With the lens defect terry i had never actually noticed this but its interesting to know, i wonder if placing the south celestial more to the center of the image this might improve :question:

I would think it would. The common defects are either called "pincussion or barrel" defects. I'm not sure what one this is but the effect is exaggerated inthe corners of the image.

Nice image Scott ... I really like the highlighted trees ... its the same effect as seeing a big old tree in a public park all highlighted at night by ground lights ... looks fantastic ... thro in some handsome star trails .. you've got yourself a masterpiece in my view. :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

I always enjoy star trails, there is so much opportunity and scope with what can be framed with the stars.
