These are the photo's I rejected for this months Photo Challenge it was a hard choice I hope I selected correctly. I thought they were good enough to want to show them to you as usual I would really appreciate critique as it is the only way to improve.:welcome:

You've captured some great action here Warren.

Not knowing your camera or settings has me at a bit of a disadvantage to give constructive advice. If I were shooting this with a DSLR I would either shoot manual and meter the birds or shoot in AV and spot meter the birds. I would also adjust ISO and focal ratio with the aim of getting the shutter speed in excess of 1/2000th sec. For fast action I prefer 1/3200 sec. plus. to aid in freezing the wings.

The birds were not making things easy by keeping their backs to you. Please give more gear and settings info and maybe I can add some more thoughts.

Being that this is the first DSLR I have ever used and I had only read the manual once and this is the second day I had being using the camera details provided in the attachment most of what you have said above went straight over my head I have a vague awareness of what you are talking about the main thing I don't understand is Metering and shot in AV and Spot Metering. My experience before this camera which I borrowed for this months theme of things that fly was a very simple digital camera with hardly any settings available. That being said I am very happy with the results and can't wait till I own a DSLR for my own so I have the time to learn it inside out. Great shots Warren - I have just been outside trying to get some of pics of the cockatoos too, but they are too quick. Trying to get the colours in their tails, and was going to use the burst mode .... then they were gone!!

Yeah they are quick it took me over 2 hours to get these shots could you tell me what burst mode is I have only used a DSLR for the first time on Monday.

Depends what camera you have - I just use a Panasonic FZ28 for most of my photos, and it has a burst mode at the back, with self timer button.
On my Canon, it is also on the back in the timer area - single shot, continuous shooting, or self timer.
Great advice there from Steve. I usually leave everything in auto, but if you want great shots, you need to do all that tricky stuff, which I'm not very good at. :sadeyes:
