I am thinking of converting a backyard shed into an astro hut so i can leave the Heq5 setup permanently and not have to align all the time. Question is should i start to consider a pier or just run on the tripod? The shed already has a concrete floor but i am unsure of how deep this concrete is, i assume its a pretty ordinary slab not quite the couple of metric tons most people seem to use for a per mount.

I'd just use the tripod for the time being until you figure out how deep that slab is... Chances are its less than a 4" deep. even if you used dynabolts to bolt a steel pier onto that, I dont know how much I'd trust it to hang on if you bumped into it hard etc.. All depends on the base of the pier though I guess....

For the time being, use the tripod, just mark the spots on the ground where the mount sits, that way if you bump it you can put it back pretty dang close without much hassles...
