Announcing the 2010 CWAS "David Malin" Awards

The Central West Astronomical Society is proud to announce the 2010 CWAS "David Malin Awards".

As usual, this year's competition introduces new ideas, concepts, and innovations with the view to making the competition more exciting, relevant and contemporary.

The competition this year will have three sections of entry - General Section, Open Themed Section and a Junior Section (18 and under).

The General Section is divided into five categories; Wide-field (camera shots), Deep Sky (telescope shots), Solar System Objects - Hi-Resolution (<30') and Wide-Field (> 30') - and a new category for Animated Sequences.

The theme for this year's Themed Open Section is "The Moonlit Landscape".

The Junior Section will have one open category and entries can be of any subject.

Last years exhibition was a resounding success and was one of the premier events of the IYA in Australia. People from all walks of life, and all over Australia, were given the opportunity to view the photographs and appreciate the efforts and skills of the nation¹s finest amateur astrophotographers.

So, start preparing your astrophotographs for the prestigious "David Malin Awards" and share with the wider public the grandeur and beauty of
astronomy.

I got the news last night too.. great to see CWAS trying to improve what is already a superb event.

I think it’s a good move finally defining the planetary sections. I felt it was tough for the high-res planetary imagers getting trumped by a widefield shot (even though it was my image ;)). Now we get the best of both very different worlds. And I’ve been having a lot of fun with timelapse movies so it’ll be great to see what others are doing as well.

I had a great time in Parkes last year (even though I could hardly talk) and will be back again this year regardless of whether I have images there or not. The online submission sounds like we’ll be able to see everybody’s submissions not just the finalists which will also be fun to browse through.

Moonlit Landscape.. hmm.. not many more lunar cycles between now and June :D

Yes it`s good to see yet another category added in there.
Being able to see everyones submissions sounds great, I wish they could fit them all in at the Dish to look at but.
Moonlite landscape sounds like alot of fun! Have to work on that one!
Don`t know if I will have many entries this year due to our big move but I`ll sure try :thumbsup:

:( How did I miss this again :( I seem to only ever hear about it after entries are closed. I wish they had an RSS feed or newsletter to directly receive notifications of it coming up. It wasn't long ago I googled about it to find out what time of year it was but only read/saw the 2009 (http://www.parkes.atnf.csiro.au/news_events/astrofest/awards/) page. Doh.

I will have to see if I can scrounge anything up this evening!
