I walked straight through a giant Orb Weaver's web in the dark to get this tonight. Lake Burley Griffin from the Black Mountain shore.

Beautiful sunset.

I imagine the hues in the clouds would have extended well beyond zenith at the time. Because there's no foreground interest (no reflections or rocks or anything else), perhaps a composition with 1/3rd water and 2/3rd sky would have worked better.

Much better, Baz.

We've been having some amazing sunsets recently. There were two absolute corkers last week. I'll have to keep it in mind, late January/early February for beautiful Canberran sunsets. Is there a lake out at Jerrabomberra? For some reason I remember reading somewhere that you can capture nice sunsets on the lake out there...

I was going to suggest the same thing as H. Looked like there's more interest in the sky than water. Well done. Lovely colours.

I couldn't help but come back to these shots. Sorry mate.

It appears as though you're trying to use the rule of thirds, but may be erring on the border side of the third points, rather than towards the middle. Take #1 above - the sky appears to be a thin sliver along the top, slightly less than 1/3.

Have a look at this link: http://photoinf.com/Golden_Mean/Eugene_Ilchenko/GoldenSection.html

See the giraffe pic. Don't get too caught up in actual dimensions, or things being exactly equal thirds. I think just around third points, but slightly towards the middle.

Ah yes, I see now. Thanks Troy. The golden triangle is an interesting concept too! Hmmmm...lots of thinking going on around these here parts now...

I'm going to go out on a limb and dis-agree with others here. Out of the two crops I prefer the first. The second looks like a sightly dramatic version of a stock-standard sunset.

IMHO I believe the strongest point to this shot is the unique colours present in the water. The reason I don't not like the seconds crop is because you loose that lovely gradient there.

I agree that you need more of the sky to appreciate the gradient / colours there yet not at the degredation of the lovely gradient below. I believe the water gradient is stronger than the skies.

In the second image the top third of the sky is not strong. I would crop, 1/3 off the top of the second and 1/3 of the bottom of the first shot.
The image I would like to see is right in the middle of those two, which would include both the skies strong points and the water.

I stick by my opinion and believe number 1 has stronger elements.
Just MHO though, take it as you will.

Great shots mate!
