Anyone near the mountains catch any hail? Looking impressive on the radar, but looks like it might just pass-by Sydney. Three times this has happened in the last storms, just missing Sydney. By the look of it, some have had orange sized hail.

Oh well, I'm setting up the camera and lightning trigger just in case.

I can hear the rumbles now. Can't wait!! :)

Mitchell,

The dog is hiding under the bed and I would love to be able to image lightning but can you tell me what a lightning trigger is?

Thanks

Frank

A lightning trigger senses a flash and triggers an exposure on the camera.

You can buy them from eBay.

The alternative is to close the lens down and kick off 10-second+ exposures continuously. Works best in the dark.

The power is just back on now. Got some good lightning here, but I didn't get any photos.

We had a power line down in the bottom paddock, so country energy came to visit.

All good now... dinner is cooking!

I built mine. It is a simple Photo resistor with a halogen globe reflector over it to direct the light towards the diode.

Works brilliantly in the day time with alot of ambient light. Picks up the faintest flashes.

If the situation allows I would always just set to continuous and take 10 secs frames, but when it is still light out, your limited to under 1 sec exposures even when stopped right down or the lightning gets washed out terribly.

The lightning trigger costs about $5.00 to make. Only downside is you can only make your own easily, if you have a Canon with the mini plug cable trigger port.
