EQ6 Hypertune and Worm replacement

Guys

Can anyone suggest somewhere that can do this for me? i would like to fit the hypertune kit, but more importantly, i would like to get a new worm gear fitted, as i am wondering if the cheap components in mine (as standard) could be changed, and my PEC vastly improved.

The thing is, i dont know where to start with this, i certainly couldnt do it myself, so ... can anyone suggest where i can have this done professionally, or a forum member with enough technical knowledge to do it for me? obviously i am happy to remunerate anyone for thier time!

Duncan,
PE as such is not a show stopper, if you have auto-guiding (which you will have to have anyway at some stage).
How big is your PE actually?
You can measure this with the help of 3KCCDTools (there is a free version that does that job).

More important errors are sudden jumps, that can not be corrected wit auto-guider due to their nature. And usually they can be reduced by proper meshing adjustment between transfer gears.

Thanks for that Bojan, this is exactly what i get, it tracks fine, and sometimes it just jumps, and gives up the ghost, in am sure its a mechanical thing, as when i look at the graph in PHD, it doesnt need much adjustment to guide, then all of a sudden it goes of the scale, the star drifts, then after about 2 seconds, it picks i up again, and starts guiding fantasticlly, as if nothing has happened.

i am pretty sure it needs the worm replacing, and regreasing, adjusting.

Now to find who can do this for me? any ideas?

Duncan, it may be that your balance is not right.
The whole thing needs to be just slightly off balance such that tracking works against the load. Otherwise you will get exactly what you are describing...
However if this was not the case, than it probably needs only proper cleaning (sometimes there are paint residuals and even small metal particles present inside) and re-greasing, and then mesh adjustment.
Very rarely you need to replace the worm, only if it was very damaged by mis-treatment

Hi Mate

Its not balance, i have been through this 1000's times, i have had it balanced on a dime, and i have had it with the balance of slightly to mesh the gears, i still get the same. my polar alignement is pretty good, no apparent movement after 15 minutes, with a reticle at a magnification of around x75, i took a 25 minute exposure last night, with no balance issue, and no star trails at all, so my alignment must be pretty good, i am absolutely certain its a mechanical thing.

If anyone can help, i have a shipping box for the EQ head alone, obviously i will cover all shipping costs, and whatever fee you think is suitable

Recently i came accross this article on a new tune up service, and the seem to offer you the option to send in your bits to be tuned up. From what I can gather you dont need to send the whole mount just the gears etc.

Edit: on reading further again now, it looks like they have discontinued the gears only service.

But i recal a post from some time ago mentioning a tune up service here in Australia by one of the local retailers. I will try and search for it and see what i can dig up.

If you want to give hypertuning a try I will probably sell my hypertune kit in the near future. It contains detailed instructions on how to pull the mount apart and put it back together. As I purchased spacers and ceramic hybrid worm bearings seperately I have enough spares to do a second mount.
