Barnard's Loop-in H alpha with a QHY8 and a Canon 50 mm f 1.8 prime

This was essentially a test image-I absolutely loved Dennis di Cicco and Sean Walkers brilliant ultra widefield work-(AS&T May June 2009)-and was keen to see what my QHY 8 could do when coupled with a 50 mm lens-in this case a Canon 50mm f 1.8-the famous (?) plastic lens that so many rave about (and in any case is the only prime I own)

imaged last night-was like 35 degrees at midnight in Sydney-and only a test. Had issues with flats-my usual lightbox didn't work properly with this little lens, and something went wrong with the darks but then, this was test. Have a few things to work on for next time

anyway here is my result

3 x 10 minute subs

QHY8
Canon 50 mm f/1.8
CG5 mount-autoguided for the 10 minute subs
Baader 7 nm H alpha Filter

location-suburban Sydney

more exposure next time will help as well as better flats and darks. But I am encouraged by this and would appreciate any comments or input?

Wow Narayan, soooo much potential in that image :eyepop:
I love wide field B&W (Ha) images they have so much nostalgia for me.

Do it again with flats and on a cooler night, it could be a corker :thumbsup:

Nice shot Narayan.
As most will attest though, you may need to try it a few stops down, and this will likely shake the coma you get at the corners. Give that a try.
It certainly has potential though.

Nice image Narayan but to meit's all a bit to small to find real detail in things like orion etc.

Doug, the field of view is 25 x 16 deg so its a hard to make out any detail in that view.

This crop from another image taken on the same night -with the same gear -shows a bit more detail-and contains at least the following:

NGC 3114
NGC 3199
NGC 3293
IC 2602 / Southern Pleiades
NGC 3372 / eta Car nebula
NGC 3532
NGC 3572
NGC 3576 /
IC 2944 / IC 2944 / lambda Cen nebula

details become more apparent in the crop

as Mike suggested I will certainly try both targets again on a cooler night and when I have a better handle on flats and darks

i've been working on getting an 80mm mamiya medium format lens adapted for my QHY9 so i can try something similar soon..
