Jennifer Love Hewitt thinks we are strange!

My wife and I were watching the 2001 movie, Heartbreakers when all of sudden Jennifer Love Hewitt (JLW) stumbles upon her boyfriend looking at stars through a refractor on the beach. She thought he was spying on somebody only to be told that he's photographing the stars (no camera in the scene though!). Then Jason Lee lets her see the Crab Nebula and M13. She remarks "why would you want to look at that stuff". Then later, when he gives her a ring which turns out to be a meteorite ring she remarks "why can't you be normal like other people?". Well, the relationship improved from that point, but we turned off the movie anyway. I snagged my wife with a view through the telescope and gave her a meteorite ring. She loved it. :P But the message came through clear...young girls think amateur astronomers are wierd geeks.

lol it's not just the guys that are thought weird and geeks. Us of the opposite sex are also looked at weirdly. A friend who i take to work said when i told her id finally got a clear view of saturn, "Oh yeah my dad used to make us look at that stuff when we were kids, It was really boring." :(
but then again, a person i didnt expect to be interested asked if she could come with us when we have our camp out to have a look, as she never has seen through a telescope, and i have to say shes a rather girly girl, and not the type to want to go camping. One more to enjoy the experience with now which is good, and all the rest are missing out as far as im concerned. :D

There's an opportunity here... We could develop a field test to see if your potential girl/boy friend is a moron or not.... It would be simple to use and results would be instantaneous:

Question: Hey gorgeous/handsome (other), how would you like to come out to a dark, secluded and isolated place with me tonight, and lie on a blanket under the stars while I show you a celestial body...?

If the response does not include reference to the NGC, IC, or M or similar catalogues... probably, a waste of time... :D

i talk to family and friends but most don't get it. every time i see the crescent moon i just think how beautiful. or seeing mars at the moment so bright and amazing. i just keep looking at the stars for hours. it makes me sad that so many people are inside their homes and missing this beauty every night.

Sorry I distracted by a strange atmospheric phenomena....some kind of blue crud in the Western sky.... seems to be spreadng.

Surely you can't mean no it cant be not BLUE SKY it jars a memory in me. Or is some other Atmospheric phenomena

Not only did the blue crud spread, it ended up covering the whole sky!!
Then, it went away and was replaced by something even stranger... black sky with little sparklng dots all over the place....

Perplexed by this, I started up my telescope and looked through the eyepiece... I saw EVEN MORE sparkling dots.... :rolleyes:

I thought, I'll take a picture of them... ! but then my laptop said, "Sucked in... your camera is broken... " :sadeyes:

then the sky went grey and it rained again. :sadeyes:

I sobbed a bit more, but the rain hid my tears and went back to bed thinking.. why did I invest many $k in this telescope...; wait long enough and the rain actually comes to you...." :(

This is a daytime phenomenon. When your clocks pass 6pm the garage door of the sky (aka cloud) closes so the blue stuff doesn't get stolen.



I think this is a generalisation of the buying astronomy gear weather theorem. Attempting to perform any astronomy related activity out of doors causes cloud or rain.
