decided to stuff around last night.. nikon 40 with sigma 150-500mm lens. 30 secs @ f6.3. iso 800. i wasnt aligned properly (i was too lazy and only roughly aligned), non guided. single shot

yeah i'll give it another shot soon. i dont even think this shot is focused :p

Good on ya David for having a go. Just a tip on focus - zoom right in on one of the faintest stars and if it is say 2 pixels in the core you are probably close enough for this starting experimentation. It looks like you might be pretty close.

my remote was dead so i couldnt go to bulb mode and go longer

30 seconds of Eta Carina, seen worse, done worse myself. It is a good starting point and something to look back on as you progress.
