Well I have finally got around to processing my first image with the new cooled modded 40D. Did this last new moon over a two night period with a total of just over 3 hours data. The 40D exhibited some banding in the darker areas which I am not sure of the cause, putting some ferrite chokes now on the leads so hopefully that shall fix that up?
Camera was set at a modest 15c with the ambient at around 20c and plenty of humidity after plenty of rain so left it on the high side to prevent condensation. Last night I ran the camera at 7-8c with no problems .
Image stacked in DSS and done a little Pixinsight and finished in PS.
Reduced to just under 50% for upload and a decent jpg resolution.
Approx 600kb

Comments most welcome!

That is awsome. What a fantastic shot. The detail is striking and the core looks great! What were the exposure times? The colours are very nice also....

Beautiful first light with the Astro 40D Gary.
I assume it's a Central DS mod or is it DIY?
Any pros and cons re using the camera?
cheers

Thanks Duncan!
cheers Jeff! Fairly happy with the result, but like usual I could have framed it better, always get this a bit lopsided for some reason!
cheers
Thanks Mike! Must admit it took a few hours to process but the data was pretty good except that minor banding.
Thanks Doug, It`s a DIY job actually, The only con at the moment is that I don`t want to push the temp too low as I havn`t made up a antidew system for it, and it weighs a bit now at 1.35kg, get some minor flexture with the focuser/tube, something else I will have to fix up.
With tests the camera cmos can get to around 25c below ambient. I shall have fun when the humidity drops down for sure! :)
Oh and the unprotected fan wants to suck my hair into it when focusing with liveview! Have to watch that one!

Wow Gary that's an excellent image, you have handled everything beautifully! The colour is nice, the core is very well handled...I don't think even I would feel the need to reprocess it..?...weeeelll  :P
Top job, that camera looks to be a corker!

Thanks Dave and Mike!
Reprocess...well actually? :) I`m not the happiest with the colors....soo wait for the Repro!
The only thing I have to add is some very short subs like 5 sec ones as the trap was still burned out with 10sec ones.
Thanks Guys!

First class image there Gary - great depth & detail and the colour balance is very good. You've exposed some really good detail in the core too! Excellent!

That's a beauty!! Gotta be proud of that process
The random banding with the 40D appears to be common problem with them all.
More noticeable with sudden fades in bright to dark areas; and during high temps.
Unfortunately I could never get rid of it, even with darks; as the banding seems to randomly flow through the image. You can see this more noticeably when viewing stacking flows in CCDStack; or timelapsed photos(avi movies).

Gary, this is a ripper, you have to be happy with results like this one. The overall illumination and colour give a very nice 3D effect.
Looking forward to seeing some more like this.

Very nice image Gary. The 40D as I well know produces very good images when cooled. You have captured lots of detail and lovely colouring. Perhaps a little more green, but not much.
Nice work.

Thanks Marcus, Mike S version really inspired me to put more work into the core. The core on his image is unreal!
cheers Marc! I did put a little work into it! Didn`t come out too bad.
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
Thanks Alex, M42 is always a must redo as each time one can do better!
cheers Leinad! thanks for dropping by.
I have a feeling alot could be the 12v power supply I got from Jaycar.
On one frame when I actually turned on the supply there was some really wicked banding..\after that it wasn`t so noticeable except the last two frames for the night which also had bad banding....that`s got me a bit stumped?
thanks for that info...
Thz Doug, much appreciated! :)
Hi Rich,
Thanks I am quiet happy with the 40D, but if the 20D had the pc control and liveview it would be sweeter!
Thanks for dropping by

David, used the 8" f/4.6 newt for this one.
Thanks Lester, yes with the 8" scope, produces nicer stars and tighter focus after the refiguring
Thanks Alex I shall try to! :)
Hi Paul, well probally needs some green in it as I always worry that it`s not red enough and forget all about the green hues..
Thanks for looking

Hey Gary,
I don't think it's the power supply, as the banding can be seen even with dark frames or bias frames at room temp, using the canon battery.
If you ever manage to conquer this problem please let me know.
