On some forums I can click a button to show my appreciation for the information the person provided. This adds to their reputation and encourages further good responses.

Perhaps you have this already on this forum and I just haven't found it. If not, it might make a nice feature.

Cheers,
Af.

Hi Carl

I've seen it on other forums too, and can see why it would be handy at times. Though it could also cause negativity by people scoring others down, have issues with cliques giving each other positive reputations and others negative, etc.

It's available on vbulletin forums by default, but it's currently disabled on IceInSpace.

It's something to think about but to me, most of those "karma"/reputation like features seem a bit clunky and more of a novelty than providing any real value.

Has anyone else formed any opinions of it based on other forums?

Just a shortie. I sorta thought that was half the idea with the use of Emoticons. Seems to be a great way of showing how and what you feel about Things and People.

Just my threepence worth.
Cheers, Duncan:)

Good points. Good to hear a different side of things as well. Another forum I am a part of (woodworkforums.com) have this turned on but you can only give positive reputation and not negative. Also, they have it limited so that you can only give reputation to the same person a few times and only give out so much reputation overall (depending on how much you post, etc.)

On that forum it seems to work well. It's not a big feature but it a nice little addition.

Cheers,
Af.

Another forum I used to spend my life on (US based) used the reputation system. It led to lots of self promoters and cliques. I don't think it's good for an egalitarian society like Australia, it really suits the American hero-worship society, where they need a guru to look up to for everything they do.

Cheers,
Jason.

Nah, I reckon it's a bad idea. Too many emotional people around.

Not a fan of it either, for all the reasons already mentioned.
