Just came across this recent APOD which is very impressive: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap100112.html
Interesting to see them both in IR. The full size version is spectacular!

Yes, it was interesting to actually see the Horsehead for once, rather than its silhouette! :)

A very skeletal looking horsey head there!
Thanks for the link

:eyepop: How cool is that. It really works for the flame nebula. Makes you wanna throw all your NB filters in the bin. Is this kind of data acquisition available to amateurs like us? IR filters are the filters those planetary guys use right?

Very interesting shot. If I'm correct the IR filter is almost black and only collects IR wavelength. I just wonder how they manage to capture colour in IR as IR is a specific wavelength invisible to our eyes and visible through a filter as black and white.
It would be a mungrel to focus.

That's way cool. Be interesting to try an IR filter on a CCD cam to see what interesting effects some objects put up.
I have an IR filter for my Canon 20D. I may try it out somehow.
I wonder if you can buy straight IR filters from the filter manufacturers for your filter wheel?
Greg.

astrodon has a tricolour NIR filter set ;) a bit expensive and you'd probably need a CCD with a very high quantum efficiency ;)
